The only thing it has done is to bring awareness to crucial causes such as combating racism and police brutality, while also bringing angst and fake anger to those who are part of the problem kneeling is directed towards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Saturday, the Kentucky Men&#8217;s Basketball team decided <a href=\"https:\/\/firstandpen.com\/staging\/5861\/kentucky-basketball-took-a-knee-sherriff-burned-shirts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">to take a united knee<\/a> in protest over the aforementioned problems and the attempted coup by domestic white terrorists at the U.S. Capitol in Washington DC. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Together as one <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/4cWrZw8z74\">pic.twitter.com\/4cWrZw8z74<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Kentucky Basketball (@KentuckyMBB) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KentuckyMBB\/status\/1348029940311105536?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 9, 2021<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe understood that our gesture would have consequences and we just want people to understand,\u201d said senior Olivier Sarr <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimestribune.com\/kentucky\/knox-fiscal-court-asks-state-leaders-to-reallocate-tax-funds-away-from-uk-after-team\/article_0ab0183e-5449-11eb-a3c5-1bd284f52177.html\">per The Times Tribune<\/a>. \u201cWe know some people would be mad or pissed but we just want people to understand that it\u2019s a peaceful way to protest and the way we can, using our platform and we just want people to understand to raise awareness and that\u2019s it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John Calipari, the Wildcats&#8217; head coach, joined the team in a peaceful sign of protest that day. Despite the outrage from state officials, he continued his support of the team&#8217;s decision, taking to his radio show to defend their actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt was all the images that they saw and they wanted to have their voice heard, and I said, well, \u2018Tell me what it\u2019s about,&#8217;\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbssports.com\/college-basketball\/news\/kentucky-defends-its-mens-basketball-players-coaches-amid-criticism-of-kneeling-during-national-anthem\/\">said Calipari.<\/a>&nbsp;\u201cThey talked to me about it. Then they said, \u2018We\u2019d like you to kneel with us,\u2019 which I did. I held my heart, but I did kneel with them because I support the guys. But it wasn\u2019t about military. Six of these players come from military families\u2026 This wasn\u2019t about the military.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But apparently, a lot can change in a few short days as Coach Calipari left his players hanging Wednesday as he moonwalked back on his initial support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI didn\u2019t know about it until 90 minutes before the game,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.courier-journal.com\/videos\/sports\/college\/kentucky\/2021\/01\/13\/kentucky-basketball-protest-john-calipari-wants-players-take-action\/6654029002\/\">said Calipari in a news conference<\/a>. \u201cWe\u2019ve had a talk since then about \u2014 you don\u2019t need to speak, you need to have action,\u201d Calipari said. \u201cHow do you bring people together? How do you make a difference? Not just how do you make a statement?<\/p><div id=\"first-3907291580\" class=\"first-content first-entity-placement\"><!-- \/22950135888\/FAP_Article_Leaderboard_Instream2 -->\r\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1700413625220-0' style='min-width: 300px; min-height: 90px;'>\r\n  <script>\r\n    googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1700413625220-0'); });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey\u2019re 18 years old. They\u2019re learning. These kids are good kids. They\u2019ve got good hearts. This political time, probably not a real good time to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wait. It was all good just a few days ago. What happened? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Was it pressure from a local Sherriff who burned Kentucky basketball t-shirts? Or maybe it was the call for a resolution by the Knox County Fiscal Court to reallocate tax funds that are normally directed to the University? Regardless, Coach Cal hung his players out to dry, particularly with his statement about timing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Apparently now the team&#8217;s decision to take a knee in response to the attempted coup last Wednesday is poor timing? Did the insurrectionists have better timing in storming the Capitol than the young men on YOUR team who risked backlash in a red state to support the fight against racism and injustice through a REAL peaceful protest?<\/p><div id=\"first-3322041876\" class=\"first-content_2 first-entity-placement\"><!-- \/22950135888\/FAP_Article_Leaderboard_Instream3 -->\r\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1700413989195-0' style='min-width: 300px; min-height: 90px;'>\r\n  <script>\r\n    googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1700413989195-0'); });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We witnessed an attack on democracy. We witnessed an attempted coup and the death of five individuals. Seems to me that there is no better time to protest what the MAGA terrorists did than after it happened and in a big SEC match-up where people are watching. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Calipari&#8217;s baffling moonwalk continued with key talking points that checked the obligatory boxes and covered his back. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Um, you know, I have friends in the military. I have friends in the police. I mean, it&#8217;s, it&#8217;s, this is our country right now.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is our country right now Coach, and you should understand what they&#8217;re going through, especially as Black and Brown people in a country where we have to abide by a different set of life rules in order to survive in situations others don&#8217;t face.<\/p><div id=\"first-2763548772\" class=\"first-content_3 first-entity-placement\"><!-- \/22950135888\/FAP_Article_Leaderboard_Instream4 -->\r\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1700414036595-0' style='min-width: 300px; min-height: 90px;'>\r\n  <script>\r\n    googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1700414036595-0'); });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You and your players saw what happened to George Floyd and every other innocent Black person killed by the police. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You and your players saw how MAGA terrorists were allowed to storm the Capitol with essentially no resistance yet Black Lives Matter protestors were met with force and violence. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a coach who has recruited and produced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kentucky.com\/sports\/college\/kentucky-sports\/uk-basketball-men\/article247209841.html#:~:text=The%20Wildcats%20had%20two%20players,current%20head%20coach%20John%20Calipari.\">31 &#8220;one-and-done&#8221;<\/a>, first-round draft picks, almost all of them Black, it&#8217;s troubling that Calipari didn&#8217;t stick to his guns and reiterate his support for his players, ones who could never get away with what we witnessed at the Nation&#8217;s Capitol. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;You know,&#8221; continued Calipari. &#8220;Hopefully going forward, we&#8217;re going to figure out and help them, uh, have some actions that are not in front of the TV, but things that they can do to bring people together and make a difference.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They did that coach.
