The Tigers put on a stellar performance in the Cheer Spirit Rally Division 1 category with a 96.1 raw score and a 95.5875 score in the final round.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Texas Southern University Cheer wins national title, becomes first HBCU to do so\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/uXFxgQpCjp0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 22-member squad led by head coach Shontrese Comeaux won a title at the NCA College Camps the previous summer, which enabled them to be able to compete in the national finals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Winning is nothing new to the Tigers and for Coach Comeaux. Yet the ride to glory not only continues to astonish her but gives her and her cheerleaders an immediate desire for next year to arrive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s been a very surreal and humbling experience,\u201d she said. \u201cWe put in all the hard work and we are planning for next year.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In late April, they finished tryouts with an amazing 225 hopefuls signing up, a testament to the impact of the squad\u2019s victory. A total of 88 of those signees showed up and 38 made the cut for next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their next trip will be to Dallas, Texas for the NCA Camp at Southern Methodist University July 21st- 23<sup>rd<\/sup> as they look to repeat as champions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey are ready to get to work,\u201d said Comeaux. \u201cWe are going to go back and get a gold.\u201d<\/p><div id=\"first-1090014415\" class=\"first-content first-entity-placement\"><!-- \/22950135888\/FAP_Article_Leaderboard_Instream2 -->\r\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1700413625220-0' style='min-width: 300px; min-height: 90px;'>\r\n  <script>\r\n    googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1700413625220-0'); });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">TSU\u2019s excellence comes at a time when HBCUs are more visible than ever and scores of students are enrolling at HBCUs at record rates. Applications to HBCUs soared by 30% in 2022. According to the Department of Education, female student enrollment at HBCUs went up from 53% in 1976 to 64% in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, HBCU athletic programs are gaining in stature and are increasingly becoming top choices for many black student-athletes. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Coach Comeaux understands the significance of their national victory given the current state of affairs and is also equally proud of solidifying cheerleading as a sport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s a win for the whole HBCU community,\u201d she said. \u201cWe win for other HBCUs and for other African American cheerleaders. We are also a sport.\u201d<\/p><div id=\"first-1593060798\" class=\"first-content_2 first-entity-placement\"><!-- \/22950135888\/FAP_Article_Leaderboard_Instream3 -->\r\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1700413989195-0' style='min-width: 300px; min-height: 90px;'>\r\n  <script>\r\n    googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1700413989195-0'); });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Given the physical and mental exertion that goes into organizing, practicing and executing elaborately choreographed routines before a panel of judges, cheerleading is definitely a sport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">TSU\u2019s accomplishments are in keeping with a history that has often gone unacknowledged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a rich tradition and history of black cheerleaders being central to the longstanding struggle for racial justice. From the 1950s onward, black cheerleaders were able to carve out spaces to showcase their talents in a world of athletics where opportunities were largely afforded to men as well as to use that visibility to speak up against racism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In April 1969, a group of over 200 black students walked out of West Senior High School in Rockford, Illinois in protest over racial discrimination. There were dozens of signs in the crowd, but one that stood out was \u201cBlack Cheerleaders to Cheer Too.\u201d<\/p><div id=\"first-2751975897\" class=\"first-content_3 first-entity-placement\"><!-- \/22950135888\/FAP_Article_Leaderboard_Instream4 -->\r\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1700414036595-0' style='min-width: 300px; min-height: 90px;'>\r\n  <script>\r\n    googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1700414036595-0'); });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That same year, a protest arose after a black girl was denied a spot on the cheerleading squad at Walter Williams High School in Burlington, North Carolina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1973, a group of black cheerleaders at Northern Illinois University in Dekalb walked off the court during a basketball game to protest inequities experienced by black students on campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then in September 2017, five black cheerleaders at Kennesaw State University were cut from the team after they followed in Colin Kaepernick\u2019s path and kneeled during the national anthem to protest police brutality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">TSU added to this legacy by simply being the best and winning on their own terms, which is a social statement in itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the Tigers look to the future, they can rely on their sustained greatness to carry them to more national accolades. They are also doing their due diligence to continue the legacy of those who came before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The squad that set the bar will live on in Coach Comeaux\u2019s heart and stand as a template for what lies ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTheir lasting legacy is a team whose energy is unmatched,\u201d she said. \u201cTheir persistence and passion are the future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They got spirit, yes they do.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In April, the Texas Southern University cheerleading squad made history by becoming the first HBCU to win a national championship.
