The long-time on-air personality, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/sports\/media\/2022\/11\/10\/fred-hickman-veteran-sports-broadcaster-dies-age-66\/8322443001\/\">according to USA Today<\/a>, was also the first broadcaster to appear on the YES network when it debuted on March 19, 2002<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFred was a joy to work with and a joyful person,\u201d said Yankees announcer Michael Kay said in a statement. \u201cA total pro that you felt comfortable with knowing he would lead you the right way on the air. He was the first voice ever heard on YES and his professionalism put us on the right track, a track we are on all these years later.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Remembering Fred Hickman\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4RcgLfIhwwg?start=18&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During his long career in sports, Hickman worked for ESPN, HFox Sports South, WVUE in New Orleans, WVLA-TV in Baton Rouge, The now shuttered Black News Channel, and most recently WDVM-TV in Maryland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hickman was one of the few original national Black sports broadcasters on air when he began his career and quickly became one of the most well recognized faces in all of sports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everyone who knew and\/or worked with Hickman was saddened by the news of his passing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">So very sad to hear about the passing of Fred Hickman. So on a whim he cold called Hickman, a CNN anchor at the time. The next day, Hickman called back and that conversation resulted in an internship for Menefee at CNN and the first step in his sports broadcasting career.<\/p><div id=\"first-3355496675\" class=\"first-content first-entity-placement\"><!-- \/22950135888\/FAP_Article_Leaderboard_Instream2 -->\r\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1700413625220-0' style='min-width: 300px; min-height: 90px;'>\r\n  <script>\r\n    googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1700413625220-0'); });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hickman also created Fred Hickman Communications, Inc., which provided broadcasting training to retired athletes and media training for athletes, coaches and front office personnel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHis legacy, besides being one of extraordinary accomplishment, was \u2014 as a person \u2014 his dignity, grace and kindness to all who were fortunate to come in contact with him,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/11\/10\/yes-network-broadcaster-fred-hickman-dead-at-66\/\">said YES Network President of Production &amp; Programming, John J.
