{"id":4177,"date":"2022-10-11T00:57:53","date_gmt":"2022-10-11T04:57:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/firstandpen.com\/staging\/5861\/?p=4177"},"modified":"2022-10-14T19:08:27","modified_gmt":"2022-10-14T23:08:27","slug":"indiana-hoosiers-football-uses-nil-deal-to-combat-gun-violence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/firstandpen.com\/staging\/5861\/indiana-hoosiers-football-uses-nil-deal-to-combat-gun-violence\/","title":{"rendered":"Indiana Hoosiers Football Uses NIL Deal To Combat Gun Violence"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/firstandpen.com\/staging\/5861\/nick-saban-criticizing-nil-as-a-way-to-buy-players-is-hilariously-hypocritical\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NIL has been criticized<\/a> by a few big-name coaches like <a href=\"https:\/\/firstandpen.com\/staging\/5861\/tag\/nick-saban\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nick Saban<\/a>, but many athletes are using it for good and to foster change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Former Miami Hurricanes <a href=\"https:\/\/firstandpen.com\/staging\/5861\/hurricanes-qb-deriq-king-signs-nil-deal-with-florida-panthers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">QB D&#8217;Eriq King<\/a> allocated much of his NIL funds to help out needy teammates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Michigan running back Blake Corum used some of his NIL funds <a href=\"https:\/\/firstandpen.com\/staging\/5861\/michigan-running-back-uses-nil-earnings-to-buy-turkeys-for-the-community\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">to host a turkey drive<\/a> in his hometown of Ypsilanti, MI, and <a href=\"https:\/\/firstandpen.com\/staging\/5861\/michigan-wolverines-blake-corum-continues-community-support-through-nil-funds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">to help kids in Detroit<\/a> through the Detroit PAL.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now another positive story about NIL fund usage has come out of the Big Ten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/businessofcollegesports.com\/name-image-likeness\/indiana-university-football-team-inks-charitable-nil-deal-to-prevent-gun-violence-in-its-community\/\">In a crucially important NIL deal<\/a>, the Indiana Hoosiers partnered with Hoosiers for Good and Stop the Violence Indianapolis to address and stop gun violence in the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20221005005507\/en\/Hoosiers-For-Good-and-Stop-the-Violence-Indianapolis-partner-with-Indiana-University-Football-athletes-challenging-young-people-to-team-up-for-peace-and-choose-positive-alternatives-to-gun-violence\">Per the release:<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;<em>Hoosiers for Good Inc and Stop the Violence Indianapolis have partnered with 114 Indiana University Football athletes for a first-of-its-kind charitable NIL campaign that challenges young people to team up for peace and put an end to gun violence.<\/em>&#8220;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Utilizing their over 500,000 followers on Twitter and Instagram, Indiana players will &#8220;share messages about positive alternatives to gun violence.&#8221;<\/p><div id=\"first-4204985652\" class=\"first-content first-entity-placement\"><!-- \/22950135888\/FAP_Article_Leaderboard_Instream2 -->\r\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1700413625220-0' style='min-width: 300px; min-height: 90px;'>\r\n  <script>\r\n    googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1700413625220-0'); });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s a crisis that has plagued Indiana, especially Black people in the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the release, African-Americans are 14 times more likely to die from gun violence in Indiana.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, the homicide rate in Indianapolis is three times higher than both the national and statewide rates since 2014\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cts.businesswire.com\/ct\/CT?id=smartlink&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.wishtv.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2021%2F08%2FIndianapolis-Gun-Violence-Problem-Analysis-Summary-Narrative.pdf&amp;esheet=52937651&amp;newsitemid=20221005005507&amp;lan=en-US&amp;anchor=according+to+2021+research&amp;index=2&amp;md5=516eeaafc47b0761bea7fa337fb6491c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to 2021 research<\/a>\u00a0from the National Institute for Criminal Justice Reform. In the city, 550 young people are currently being prosecuted for gun crimes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even more sobering, gun violence nationally is the leading cause of premature death; it has led to more than 38,000 deaths and approximately 85,000 injuries each year. <\/p><div id=\"first-2577382669\" class=\"first-content_2 first-entity-placement\"><!-- \/22950135888\/FAP_Article_Leaderboard_Instream3 -->\r\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1700413989195-0' style='min-width: 300px; min-height: 90px;'>\r\n  <script>\r\n    googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1700413989195-0'); });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the Hoosiers are taking action to tackle this grave issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThese athletes have an outsized voice in their communities, and young people look up to them,\u201d said Tyler Harris, executive director of Hoosiers For Good, in the release. \u201cWe hope that the IU Football team can help change the conversation around gun violence so that more young people are able to make choices that promote peace in their communities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His sentiments are echoed by Anthony Beverly, director of Stop the Violence Indianapolis. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We need support to reach more people in Indianapolis and around the country, and the IU Football players have a huge presence on and offline,\u201d said Beverly. \u201cAt Stop the Violence, we see that high school students, those who might be most influenced by these athletes, are afraid to go to school.
