{"id":4091,"date":"2022-09-23T23:42:11","date_gmt":"2022-09-24T03:42:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/firstandpen.com\/staging\/5861\/?p=4091"},"modified":"2022-09-24T10:02:38","modified_gmt":"2022-09-24T14:02:38","slug":"the-situation-involving-ime-udoka-is-as-puzzling-as-it-is-shady","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/firstandpen.com\/staging\/5861\/the-situation-involving-ime-udoka-is-as-puzzling-as-it-is-shady\/","title":{"rendered":"The Situation Involving Ime Udoka Is As Puzzling As It Is Shady"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the news surrounding Celtics head coach Ime Udoka first dropped on Wednesday night, it was as puzzling as it was vague.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Udoka, who took the team to the NBA Finals in his first year as the Celtics&#8217; head coach, was reportedly set to be suspended for the entire 2022-23 season for violating team policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That was about the only concrete information we had at the time thanks to NBA insiders Adrian Wojnarowski and Shams Charania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The other part of the report was that the suspension was due to some sort of consensual relationship between Udoka and a female team staffer, which the team had policies prohibiting or limiting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because of the unclarity of the news, and because it had the feeling of something more serious on the horizon, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/firstandpen\/status\/1572939798758977541\">we chose not to report on it<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And we&#8217;re glad we did because over the next two days, the situation escalated dramatically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet two days later, we&#8217;re all still in the dark as to what actually happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the flame was ignited on Wednesday evening, it was fanned by the Celtics team statement on Thursday evening.<\/p><div id=\"first-1623303330\" class=\"first-content first-entity-placement\"><!-- \/22950135888\/FAP_Article_Leaderboard_Instream2 -->\r\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1700413625220-0' style='min-width: 300px; min-height: 90px;'>\r\n  <script>\r\n    googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1700413625220-0'); });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The Celtics have officially suspended head coach Ime Udoka for the season for &quot;violations of team policies&quot;.<br><br>The suspension takes effect immediately. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/7B8cBbthNd\">pic.twitter.com\/7B8cBbthNd<\/a><\/p>&mdash; First and Pen (@firstandpen) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/firstandpen\/status\/1573125605876531200?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 23, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The Boston Celtics announced today that the team has suspended Head Coach Ime Udoka for the 2022-23 season for violations of team policies. A decision about his future with the Celtics beyond this season will be made at a later date. The suspension takes effect immediately,&#8221; said the team in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Friday morning, the Celtics held a press conference in which team owner Wyc Grousbeck and President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens vaguely addressed the situation with extremely limited detail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">&quot;We immediately brought in a respected law firm to conduct a thorough investigation.&quot;<br><br>Today, Celtics owner Wyc Grousbeck spoke on the situation surrounding head coach, Ime Udoka, his suspension and the regret the organization has for the treatment female employees have received. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/cJ05AWG1nW\">pic.twitter.com\/cJ05AWG1nW<\/a><\/p>&mdash; First and Pen (@firstandpen) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/firstandpen\/status\/1573342440563658754?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 23, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both men mentioned Udoka&#8217;s remorse and acceptance of the punishment, which included the year-long suspension and a &#8220;significant&#8221; financial penalty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They also directed their frustration and anger towards those who targeted female team employees in an attempt to identify the woman involved with Udoka.<\/p><div id=\"first-2991226853\" class=\"first-content_2 first-entity-placement\"><!-- \/22950135888\/FAP_Article_Leaderboard_Instream3 -->\r\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1700413989195-0' style='min-width: 300px; min-height: 90px;'>\r\n  <script>\r\n    googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1700413989195-0'); });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We, as an organization, have a responsibility to make sure we&#8217;re there to support them now [female Celtics&#8217; employees] because a lot of people were dragged unfairly into that,&#8221; said Stevens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The two men informed everyone that the investigation actually began in the summer when the team first learned of the relationship between the two parties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other than that, the only other thing we learned <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/firstandpen\/status\/1573345283358208000\">was that &#8220;multiple violations&#8221;<\/a> were committed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the end, the only we can do is speculate about what happened.<\/p><div id=\"first-4233671677\" class=\"first-content_3 first-entity-placement\"><!-- \/22950135888\/FAP_Article_Leaderboard_Instream4 -->\r\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1700414036595-0' style='min-width: 300px; min-height: 90px;'>\r\n  <script>\r\n    googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1700414036595-0'); });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In all honesty, while I am curious as to what the violations were, I still feel the way that I felt on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I wasn&#8217;t interested in the personal affairs of Ime Udoka and the unnamed staffer then, and I&#8217;m still not interested now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But what is as disturbing as is shady is how it was leaked, why it was leaked and why the Celtics suspended Udoka instead of firing him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If it was that serious, which apparently it was as they had to hire a legal firm to investigate and then ultimately imposed a hefty fine and suspended him for the year, then they should have fired him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, they benched Udoka with the option to put him back into play next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s head scratching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The situation is so bizarre that it caused Stephen A. Smith and Malika Andrews to get into a slight dust-up on <em>ESPN First Take<\/em> after the press conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The full comments by Stephen A. Smith in the exchange with Malika Andrews on First Take:<br><br> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/iPZxLRWrmI\">pic.twitter.com\/iPZxLRWrmI<\/a><\/p>&mdash; ClutchPoints (@ClutchPointsApp) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ClutchPointsApp\/status\/1573354055271059457?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 23, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Smith introduced the idea that the situation had racial undertones, as a Black head coach had his personal business outted, something the industry regularly experiences but keeps under wraps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He only grew more incensed over the next few days as limited information was circulated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s so strange and shady that it prompted Matt Barnes to delete his tweet on Thursday in support of Udoka and post a new video discussing his change of heart after learning what really happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Matt Barnes on the situation with ime. He was told what happened and it sounds like it\u2019s pretty bad. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/PnMZzR2WsW\">pic.twitter.com\/PnMZzR2WsW<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Ant \u2618\ufe0f\ud83c\udfc0 (@GangCeltics) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GangCeltics\/status\/1573363205468000256?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 23, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;After finding out the facts after I spoke, I erased what I posted because this situation in Boston is deep, it&#8217;s messy, it&#8217;s one hundred times uglier than any of us thought, and that&#8217;s why I erased what I said,&#8221; said Barnes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Barnes to say this, it has to be bad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And what about Nia Long, Udoka&#8217;s long-time partner and fiance? The two have a son and she moved to Boston a few weeks ago.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tmz.com\/2022\/09\/23\/celtics-coach-ime-udoka-nia-long-blindside-affair-moved-family-boston\/?adid=social-twa\">According to TMZ<\/a>, Long was in absolute shock when the news dropped but didn&#8217;t want to be in the spotlight, so she issued a statement through her rep. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The outpouring of love and support from family, friends and the community during this difficult time means so much to me. I ask that my privacy be respected as I process the recent events. Above all, I am a mother and will continue to focus on my children.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As for Ime, he issued the following statement:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I want to apologize to our players, fans, the entire Celtics organization, and my family for letting them down. I am sorry for putting the team in this difficult situation, and I accept the team&#8217;s decision. Out of respect for everyone involved, I will have no further comment.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So aside from the fact that Ime Udoka did something, was fined for it and was suspended for a year, what have we really learned?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At this point, unless something criminal or disgustingly immoral arises, we should simply mind our business and let Udoka work it out. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, let&#8217;s focus on more important stories such as <a href=\"https:\/\/firstandpen.com\/staging\/5861\/herm-edwards-reportedly-sold-out-by-arizona-state-sun-devils-staff\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Herm Edwards allegedly being backstabbed<\/a> before being fired and <a href=\"https:\/\/firstandpen.com\/staging\/5861\/mississippis-welfare-fraud-case-is-bigger-than-brett-favre-but-its-definitely-about-brett-favre\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Brett Favre and others taking millions from needy families in the Mississippi welfare fraud scandal.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When the news surrounding Celtics head coach Ime Udoka first dropped on Wednesday night, it was as puzzling as it was vague.
