reported final Open appearance and Coco Gauff&#8217;s run to the quarterfinals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, these fans are tuning in to watch the 22nd-ranked Tiafoe follow the path that Arthur Ashe blazed fifty years ago at the courts now graced by a new generation of players like Big Foe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Frances Tiafoe becomes the first Black \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\uddf8 man to reach a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/USOpen?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#USOpen<\/a> semifinal since Arthur Ashe in 1972.<br><br>He did it on the court named after Ashe. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/BeOpen?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#BeOpen<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/IEJtqCe2vo\">pic.twitter.com\/IEJtqCe2vo<\/a><\/p>&mdash; US Open Tennis (@usopen) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/usopen\/status\/1567615290191626240?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 7, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the US Open, Tiafoe became the first Black American man to reach a US Open semifinal since Arthur Ashe did it in 1972.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And, even more significantly, Tiafoe accomplished that feat on a court named after Ashe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I love to show the world what I can do,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/tennis\/story\/_\/id\/34544209\/american-frances-tiafoe-downs-andrey-rublev-straight-sets-moves-us-open-semifinals\">said the 24-year-old Tiafoe<\/a>. &#8220;I just want to go out there and try to give the crowd what they want &#8212; and that&#8217;s me getting the win.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tiafoe&#8217;s history-making run hasn&#8217;t been easy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the first round, he defeated fellow American Marcos Giron 7-6, 6-4, 6-3.<\/p><div id=\"first-3175685657\" class=\"first-content first-entity-placement\"><!-- \/22950135888\/FAP_Article_Leaderboard_Instream2 -->\r\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1700413625220-0' style='min-width: 300px; min-height: 90px;'>\r\n  <script>\r\n    googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1700413625220-0'); });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His second-round match against Australian Jason Kubler was more challenging, with Tiafoe winning 7-6, 7-5, 7-6.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The third round against Argentinian Diego Schwartzman began the same way the second round ended, 7-6 before Tiafoe dug in and prevailed 6-4, 6-4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then came the round of sixteen, where he faced off against the no. 2 ranked player in the world, Rafael Nadal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not many gave Tiafoe a chance against the dominant player from Spain, many thinking that his exciting run was over.<\/p><div id=\"first-1920683038\" class=\"first-content_2 first-entity-placement\"><!-- \/22950135888\/FAP_Article_Leaderboard_Instream3 -->\r\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1700413989195-0' style='min-width: 300px; min-height: 90px;'>\r\n  <script>\r\n    googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1700413989195-0'); });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Tiafoe had other plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The younger player refused to back down, eventually shocking the Spaniard and the world with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory, pushing him into the quarterfinals against Russia&#8217;s Andrey Rublev.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In that match, played in front of a boisterous crowd, Tiafoe dug deep and fought through to earn the 7-6, 7-6, 6-4 victory over the world&#8217;s ninth-ranked player.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wednesday&#8217;s victory thrilled all in the celebrity-packed crowd, including good friend and Washington Wizards star, Bradley Beal.<\/p><div id=\"first-3938330893\" class=\"first-content_3 first-entity-placement\"><!-- \/22950135888\/FAP_Article_Leaderboard_Instream4 -->\r\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1700414036595-0' style='min-width: 300px; Roddick is also the last American to win a Grand Slam singles championship, winning the US Open in 2003. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now Frances Tiafoe is two victories away from breaking a 19-year-old drought for US men&#8217;s tennis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s something that he&#8217;s poised to do and appears more than capable of doing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He&#8217;s beaten the no. 2 player in the world and has fought through matches where others would likely crumble. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And he&#8217;s done it consistently during this US Open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tiafoe is making history and definitely making Arthur Ashe proud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1968, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennisfame.com\/hall-of-famers\/inductees\/arthur-ashe\">Ashe became the first black person to win the US Open<\/a>.
