Over the last few years, <a href=\"https:\/\/firstandpen.com\/staging\/5861\/dawn-staley-leads-from-the-front-where-shes-always-been\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">she added activist to her resume.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Friday evening, Staley put all of those talents on display when she decided to cancel South Carolina&#8217;s home-and-home series against BYU in response to <a href=\"https:\/\/firstandpen.com\/staging\/5861\/black-duke-volleyball-player-targeted-by-racist-taunts-at-byu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the racist incident that took place last week at a Cougars volleyball game in Utah<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Dawn Staley announces that because of the racist incident at a BYU volleyball game in Utah, South Carolina is canceling their home and home games against the Cougars over the next two seasons, including their November 7th season home opener. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/fjJmQw8ukr\">pic.twitter.com\/fjJmQw8ukr<\/a><\/p>&mdash; First and Pen (@firstandpen) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/firstandpen\/status\/1565837917670588416?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 2, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs a head coach, my job is to do what\u2019s best for my players and staff. The incident at BYU has led me to reevaluate our home-and-home, and I don\u2019t feel that this is the right time for us to engage in this series,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/gamecocksonline.com\/news\/2022\/09\/02\/womens-basketball-to-change-opponent-for-home-opener\/\">said Staley in a statement.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The incident Staley is referring to took place on Friday, August 26th at BYU in the team&#8217;s game against Duke. In that game, a fan hurled racist taunts at Black Duke player Rachel Richardson. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At one point the fan even threatened the Duke team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Judge Lesa Pamplin, Richardson&#8217;s godmother, first alerted everyone to the situation <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LesaPamplin\/status\/1563568375074136064\">when she tweeted about it<\/a> afterward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;My Goddaughter is the only Black starter for Duke&#8217;s volleyball team,&#8221; tweeted Pamplin. &#8220;While playing yesterday, she was a call a ni**er every time she served. She was threatened by a white male that told her to watch her back going to the team bus. A police officer had to be put by their bench.&#8221;<\/p><div id=\"first-3020454314\" class=\"first-content first-entity-placement\"><!-- \/22950135888\/FAP_Article_Leaderboard_Instream2 -->\r\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1700413625220-0' style='min-width: 300px; min-height: 90px;'>\r\n  <script>\r\n    googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1700413625220-0'); });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">BYU and Duke issued a flurry of statements in the aftermath, apologizing, condemning racism and the individual involved, and letting it be known that player safety is paramount for the institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Richardson herself tweeted out a statement detailing the incident and what transpired during and after the game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"qme\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/morethanavolleyballplayer?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#morethanavolleyballplayer<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/JJsofA6VgI\">pic.twitter.com\/JJsofA6VgI<\/a><\/p>&mdash; rachel \u2661 (@rachrich03) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/rachrich03\/status\/1563931324569849856?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 28, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In her tweet, Richardson described how she played through the humiliating and degrading incident, and how <a href=\"https:\/\/firstandpen.com\/staging\/5861\/byu-duke-volleyball-game-showed-how-lonely-the-fight-against-racism-can-be\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">she suffered inside<\/a> while no one helped her out, including teammates, coaches or officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Well, coach Staley decided to take a stand on Friday evening, a stand supported by South Carolina&#8217;s athletic department.<\/p><div id=\"first-1626930843\" class=\"first-content_2 first-entity-placement\"><!-- \/22950135888\/FAP_Article_Leaderboard_Instream3 -->\r\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1700413989195-0' style='min-width: 300px; min-height: 90px;'>\r\n  <script>\r\n    googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1700413989195-0'); });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDawn and I have discussed her thoughts on the situation,&#8221; said athletic director Ray Tanner in a statement. &#8220;I support Dawn and all of our coaches in their right to schedule games and opponents that are best for their teams.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The series featured games this season and next, including the Gamecock&#8217;s home opener on November 7th. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So while they&#8217;re searching for a team\/s to replace BYU on the schedule, Staley let it be known that she wasn&#8217;t playing games with BYU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Literally and figuratively. <\/p><div id=\"first-583000022\" class=\"first-content_3 first-entity-placement\"><!-- \/22950135888\/FAP_Article_Leaderboard_Instream4 -->\r\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1700414036595-0' style='min-width: 300px; min-height: 90px;'>\r\n  <script>\r\n    googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1700414036595-0'); });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dawn Staley has always been more than a coach.
