When it&#8217;s time to rear its ugly head, it&#8217;s time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That happened on Friday night in Utah at a volleyball game between the BYU Cougars and the visiting <a href=\"https:\/\/firstandpen.com\/staging\/5861\/tag\/duke-blue-devils\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Duke Blue Devils<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Judge Lesa Pamplin, her Goddaughter was targeted by racist taunts from BYU fans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">My Goddaughter is the only black starter for Dukes volleyball team. A police officer had to be put by their bench.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">BYU Athletics issued a statement regarding the incident on Saturday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Official statement from BYU Athletics. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/5bIwXNwr7J\">pic.twitter.com\/5bIwXNwr7J<\/a><\/p>&mdash; BYU Cougars (@BYUCougars) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BYUCougars\/status\/1563616547880329216?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 27, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;All of God&#8217;s children deserve love and respect, and BYU Athletics is completely committed to leading out in abandoning attitudes and actions of prejudice of any kind and rooting out racism,&#8221; tweeted BYU. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;When a student-athlete or a fan comes to a BYU sporting event, we expect that they will be treated with love and respect and feel safe on our campus. It is for this reason BYU has banned a fan who was identified by Duke during last night&#8217;s volleyball match from all BYU athletic venues,&#8221; continued BYU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">BYU also noted that the fan was not a student at the university.<\/p><div id=\"first-330386783\" class=\"first-content first-entity-placement\"><!-- \/22950135888\/FAP_Article_Leaderboard_Instream2 -->\r\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1700413625220-0' style='min-width: 300px; min-height: 90px;'>\r\n  <script>\r\n    googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1700413625220-0'); });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pamplin was justifiably upset at the incident and enraged that her goddaughter was called the N-word without immediate action being taken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;You allowed this racist behavior to continue without intervening,&#8221; said Pamplin. &#8220;Apologizing to her parents after the fact is not enough. She will soon be sharing her story.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">BYU, a Mormon school in Provo, Utah, stated that they don&#8217;t tolerate racism of any kind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTo say we are extremely disheartened in the actions of a small number of fans in last night\u2019s volleyball match\u2026is not strong enough language. We will not tolerate behavior of this kind. Specifically, the use of a racial slur at any of our athletic events is absolutely unacceptable. We wholeheartedly apologize to Duke University and especially its student athletes,\u201d tweeted BYU.<\/p><div id=\"first-2934450087\" class=\"first-content_2 first-entity-placement\"><!-- \/22950135888\/FAP_Article_Leaderboard_Instream3 -->\r\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1700413989195-0' style='min-width: 300px; min-height: 90px;'>\r\n  <script>\r\n    googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1700413989195-0'); });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But for the target of the racist venom, identified as sophomore Rachel Richardson, the only Black player on Duke&#8217;s team, it was too late.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The taunting had occurred and play had not been stopped to immediately address the situation and remove the fan in question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksl.com\/article\/50465075\/byu-bans-fan-after-alleged-racial-incident-with-duke-volleyball-player\">According to KSL.com<\/a>, it wasn&#8217;t until the middle of the second set that a police officer could be seen by the Duke bench.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But again, play had not been stopped to remove the racist fan.<\/p><div id=\"first-3242585695\" class=\"first-content_3 first-entity-placement\"><!-- \/22950135888\/FAP_Article_Leaderboard_Instream4 -->\r\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1700414036595-0' style='min-width: 300px; min-height: 90px;'>\r\n  <script>\r\n    googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1700414036595-0'); });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that should definitely have happened if a player is threatened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Duke&#8217;s athletic director, Nina King, issued a statement as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;First and foremost, our priority is the well-being of Duke student-athletes,&#8221; said King in a statement from the school. &#8220;They should always have the opportunity to compete in an inclusive, anti-racist environment which promotes equality and fair play. Following extremely unfortunate circumstances at Friday night&#8217;s match at BYU, we are compelled to shift today&#8217;s match against Rider to a different location to afford both teams the safest atmosphere for competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We are appreciative of the support from BYU&#8217;s athletic administration as we navigate this troubling situation.
