{"id":3930,"date":"2022-08-15T09:35:45","date_gmt":"2022-08-15T13:35:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/firstandpen.com\/staging\/5861\/?p=3930"},"modified":"2022-08-15T09:36:11","modified_gmt":"2022-08-15T13:36:11","slug":"after-ending-race-normed-tests-black-nfl-retirees-are-finally-getting-help","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/firstandpen.com\/staging\/5861\/after-ending-race-normed-tests-black-nfl-retirees-are-finally-getting-help\/","title":{"rendered":"After Ending Race-Normed Tests, Black NFL Retirees Are Finally Getting Help"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We all knew <a href=\"https:\/\/firstandpen.com\/staging\/5861\/?s=race+norming\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">race-normed tests<\/a> were racist and hampered the ability of Black former NFL players to get the help they desperately needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now proof is on view for all to see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Late last week, more than 300 Black former NFL players initially denied financial awards from the league&#8217;s concussion settlement finally qualified for money or league funded medical treatment after race norming in tests was eliminated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Race-norming&#8221; assumes that Black people start at a lower cognitive functioning level than white people. So when players have to demonstrate the effects of concussions, it\u2019s harder for Black players to show a deficit because they begin from a lower starting point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This process was used by the NFL to determine who qualified for monetary awards geared toward treating health ailments plaguing these former players.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cyril V. Smith, an attorney representing former players\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tropicsofmeta.com\/2020\/11\/01\/race-ing-the-nfl-how-anti-black-standards-are-built-into-the-2015-concussion-settlement\/\">Kevin Henry and Najeh Davenport<\/a>, filed a lawsuit in 2020 to have the practice eliminated, and that&#8217;s when the public first learned of the biased tests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/firstandpen.com\/staging\/5861\/nfl-pledges-to-end-race-norming-tests-that-devalued-pain-of-black-players\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">A year later, the NFL agreed to stop using race normed testing<\/a>, but it couldn&#8217;t be removed from the settlement until federal court judge Anita Brody approved it, <a href=\"https:\/\/firstandpen.com\/staging\/5861\/race-norming-finally-removed-from-nfl-concussion-settlement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">which she did in March of 2022<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/2022\/08\/12\/nfl-race-norming-settlements\/\">according to the report filed in federal court<\/a> by the law firm that handles claims for the NFL, 646 Black former players had their test results rescored under the new system.<\/p><div id=\"first-3380306735\" class=\"first-content first-entity-placement\"><!-- \/22950135888\/FAP_Article_Leaderboard_Instream2 -->\r\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1700413625220-0' style='min-width: 300px; min-height: 90px;'>\r\n  <script>\r\n    googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1700413625220-0'); });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">61 of them qualified for new or increased settlement payments. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">246 players qualified for pre-dementia diagnosis, which means they will be covered by the NFL.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The financial awards range from $25,000 to over $5 million depending on variables such as age and playing experience. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Our work has produced some great results and has opened many eyes,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfl.com\/news\/more-black-nfl-retirees-win-dementia-cases-in-rescored-tests\">said Ken Jenkins<\/a>, a former Washington player who, along with his wife, Amy Lewis, helped fight to bring change to the settlement. &#8220;Now we&#8217;re really focused on getting as many players who deserve compensation to be compensated.&#8221;<\/p><div id=\"first-3230518937\" class=\"first-content_2 first-entity-placement\"><!-- \/22950135888\/FAP_Article_Leaderboard_Instream3 -->\r\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1700413989195-0' style='min-width: 300px; min-height: 90px;'>\r\n  <script>\r\n    googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1700413989195-0'); });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While this is a great start, this is far from over for the men who have suffered for years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than 2,400 players whose initial claims were judged through race-normed tests can go now go through the process again. Hundreds of others were in the process of being evaluated when the changes were instituted. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The NFL never admitted any wrongdoing when agreeing to the settlement, but they certainly added insult to injury for Black players by subjecting them to race-normed tests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While some are still around to receive treatment, we have lost others like <a href=\"https:\/\/firstandpen.com\/staging\/5861\/tag\/vincent-jackson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vincent Jackson<\/a>, Junior Seau and David Duerson who tragically suffered in silence until they took their own lives.<\/p><div id=\"first-2590474991\" class=\"first-content_3 first-entity-placement\"><!-- \/22950135888\/FAP_Article_Leaderboard_Instream4 -->\r\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1700414036595-0' style='min-width: 300px; min-height: 90px;'>\r\n  <script>\r\n    googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1700414036595-0'); });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the league hadn&#8217;t made Black former players work so much harder to prove they were suffering, maybe <a href=\"https:\/\/firstandpen.com\/staging\/5861\/the-nfls-flawed-concussion-settlement-is-exposed-again-by-phillip-adams-cte-diagnosis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the horrific events surrounding the death of men like Phillip Adams<\/a> could have been prevented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But support is coming now.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Men who are homeless, men who originally signed up but their cognitive function changed, men who are divorced or isolated &#8212; we are going to go looking for them,&#8221; said Lewis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let&#8217;s hope that these new tests and awards can help prevent the next Phillip Adams from happening, and bring these players and their families the help they all need and deserve.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We all knew race-normed tests were racist and hampered the ability of Black former NFL players to get the help they desperately needed.
