{"id":3873,"date":"2022-08-02T15:49:08","date_gmt":"2022-08-02T19:49:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/firstandpen.com\/staging\/5861\/?p=3873"},"modified":"2022-08-02T15:56:58","modified_gmt":"2022-08-02T19:56:58","slug":"many-think-deshaun-watson-won-but-ultimately-he-lost","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/firstandpen.com\/staging\/5861\/many-think-deshaun-watson-won-but-ultimately-he-lost\/","title":{"rendered":"Many Think Deshaun Watson Won, But Ultimately He Lost"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Deshaun Watson lost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the surface, many believe he won and continues winning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After all, <a href=\"https:\/\/firstandpen.com\/staging\/5861\/browns-qb-deshaun-watson-receives-6-game-suspension\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Watson\u2019s suspension handed down by an NFL arbitrator Monday<\/a> was just six games and included no fine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Plus, Watson forced his way out of Houston and to Cleveland, where he signed a record-setting, fully guaranteed $230 million contract.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Watson also rigged his contract so that any missed games in 2022 now amount to just $345,000 in lost wages from his $1 million base salary this season. Next season, Watson makes $46 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And let\u2019s not forget that Watson didn\u2019t play a down for the Texans a year ago and still collected all of his bread for the season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Watson faced a whopping 24 civil lawsuits filed by women for allegations of sexual misconduct, <a href=\"https:\/\/firstandpen.com\/staging\/5861\/deshaun-watson-settles-20-of-his-24-sexual-misconduct-cases\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">20 of which he recently settled<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fundamentally, the NFL won its case against Watson in the eyes of the arbitrator, retired federal judge Sue L. Robinson.<\/p><div id=\"first-3990533759\" class=\"first-content first-entity-placement\"><!-- \/22950135888\/FAP_Article_Leaderboard_Instream2 -->\r\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1700413625220-0' style='min-width: 300px; min-height: 90px;'>\r\n  <script>\r\n    googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1700413625220-0'); });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In her 16-page report, Robinson found Watson guilty of violating the league\u2019s personal conduct policy in three ways: 1) by engaging in sexual assault, 2) by engaging in conduct that poses a genuine danger to the safety and well-being of another person and 3) by engaging in conduct that undermines or puts at risk the integrity of the NFL.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Robinson also wrote that her decision was \u201climited by the record presented to me.\u201d The case before Robinson was about four women, not all 24.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In its investigation, the NFL interviewed just 12 of the 24 women. Of those 12, only four were used as a basis of the league\u2019s argument that Watson, indeed, did violate the personal conduct policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Entering the arbitrator process, the league was seeking an indefinite suspension for Watson\u2019s actions and, reportedly, a fine of $8 million. Most thought that penalty was over the top.<\/p><div id=\"first-2690251637\" class=\"first-content_2 first-entity-placement\"><!-- \/22950135888\/FAP_Article_Leaderboard_Instream3 -->\r\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1700413989195-0' style='min-width: 300px; min-height: 90px;'>\r\n  <script>\r\n    googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1700413989195-0'); });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, by most accounts, Watson caught a break and received a lenient decision from the NFL arbitrator. Many view his punishment as nothing more than a slap on the wrist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Watson didn\u2019t win when it comes to his reputation and how good, decent people view him moving forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Criminal or not by the letter of the law, many believe Watson\u2019s actions and behavior were highly questionable and disappointing, at the very least.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s just not what you would expect a face-of-franchise player to take part in. <\/p><div id=\"first-619109676\" class=\"first-content_3 first-entity-placement\"><!-- \/22950135888\/FAP_Article_Leaderboard_Instream4 -->\r\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1700414036595-0' style='min-width: 300px; min-height: 90px;'>\r\n  <script>\r\n    googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1700414036595-0'); });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not only was he playing with his rep, but also the team\u2019s standing in the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even the soft arbitrator called Watson\u2019s actions \u201cegregious.\u201d And that Watson \u201chad a sexual purpose &#8211; not just a therapeutic purpose &#8211; in making these arrangements with these particular therapists.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before this epic scandal broke, Watson was considered a pillar of the community, a good man with excellent morals and values.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And even if you argue that Watson\u2019s activities didn\u2019t reach the proportion for a grand jury to indict him on the former charges, it gave you insight into what kind of man Watson is behind closed doors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For sure, athletes have made mistakes and redeemed themselves in the healing process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It just seems as if it will be a harder process because to this day, despite all the trials and tribulations, Watson has refused to believe he has done anything wrong and hasn\u2019t been remorseful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In order for others to forgive you and heal, you must first sincerely admit your actions were wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It seems inconceivable that Watson still hasn\u2019t gotten it after a year and half of having his charmed life turned upside down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The NFL now has until Thursday to appeal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If that happens, Watson\u2019s boat will be sunk. The NFL would be guaranteed a victory because commissioner Roger Goodell would rule in the appeal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At that time, Watson could receive a longer suspension, a substantial fine and possibly be lost to the Browns for the entire season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s not a slam dunk that the NFL will move off Robinson\u2019s ruling. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But if the league reads the room and women\u2019s groups and advertisers aren\u2019t happy about the ruling, all bets are off, especially if the latter isn&#8217;t happy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Don\u2019t forget that\u2019s how the Washington football team shed its nickname most thought was racist. Many advertisers threatened to pull money from the franchise if the name wasn&#8217;t changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For sure, Watson isn\u2019t out of woods &#8211; even if the suspension stays where it is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The here and now is that many might believe &#8211; including Watson &#8211; that he pulled the great escape, pulled the wool over many eyes and is the winner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But history hasn\u2019t fully been written. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Years from now, Watson\u2019s career and place could be viewed differently, sideways, if you will.
