{"id":3780,"date":"2022-07-21T18:12:52","date_gmt":"2022-07-21T22:12:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/firstandpen.com\/staging\/5861\/?p=3780"},"modified":"2022-07-23T10:22:50","modified_gmt":"2022-07-23T14:22:50","slug":"the-espys-blew-it-for-aliyah-boston-deserved-much-better","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/firstandpen.com\/staging\/5861\/the-espys-blew-it-for-aliyah-boston-deserved-much-better\/","title":{"rendered":"The ESPYS Blew It, For Aliyah Boston Deserved Much Better"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Title IX celebrated its 50th anniversary last month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The civil rights law passed as part of the Education Amendments of 1972 meant to prohibit sex-based discrimination in any school or any other education program receiving federal financial assistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was a landmark passage, one that fueled the future and continued growth and success of women&#8217;s sports. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet despite all of the good the law has done, it&#8217;s clear just how much work remains to be done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We have seen the ongoing fight by women for better pay in sports over the last fifty years, with a few victories such as the recent win by USWNT in March 2022 for better pay and adequate resources such as flights and training conditions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the gender pay gap remains real.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s one of the primary reasons why WNBA players, <a href=\"https:\/\/firstandpen.com\/staging\/5861\/?s=brittney+griner\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">including the still-wrongfully detained Brittney Griner<\/a>, are forced to play overseas in order to supplement their income during the off-season.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Income which they should rightfully be afforded in the U.S.<\/p><div id=\"first-2627818137\" class=\"first-content first-entity-placement\"><!-- \/22950135888\/FAP_Article_Leaderboard_Instream2 -->\r\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1700413625220-0' style='min-width: 300px; min-height: 90px;'>\r\n  <script>\r\n    googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1700413625220-0'); });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Modern sport remains shrouded in an imperialist, white-supremacist, racist, sexist, classist, homophobic, transphobic,<em> misogynoir-istic<\/em> system to this day. While we have seen an increase in women\u2019s and girls&#8217; participation in sports since Title IX&#8217;s passage, as well as the introduction of new events to the Olympic stage (e.g., women\u2019s water polo in 2000), media coverage of women\u2019s and men\u2019s sports remains heavily unbalanced in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/releases\/2021\/Q1\/overlooking-her-shot-womens-sports-need-an-assist-as-coverage-remains-the-same-as-30-years-ago.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">favor of men<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recently the sports media landscape has witnessed a wave of success in women&#8217;s sports broadcasts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ratings for the 2022 Women&#8217;s College World Series <a href=\"https:\/\/theathletic.com\/news\/wcws-viewership-outgains-mcws\/rbtQfdTcCbuE\/\">topped that of the men&#8217;s.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 2022 WNBA All-Star Game <a href=\"https:\/\/theathletic.com\/3418859\/2022\/07\/12\/wnba-all-star-game-wimbledon-tv-ratings\/\">posted its best rating since 2015<\/a>.<\/p><div id=\"first-1868978530\" class=\"first-content_2 first-entity-placement\"><!-- \/22950135888\/FAP_Article_Leaderboard_Instream3 -->\r\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1700413989195-0' style='min-width: 300px; min-height: 90px;'>\r\n  <script>\r\n    googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1700413989195-0'); });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet despite those accomplishments, the ESPYS decided to take a step backward and snub women&#8217;s sports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prior to last night&#8217;s live broadcast, it was learned that the \u201cBest College Athlete, Women\u2019s Sports\u201d award would not be televised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To add insult to injury, several women ESPY nominees were not invited to the event, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestate.com\/opinion\/article263606133.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">only Black woman at the collegiate level<\/a> to be nominated for an ESPY\u2014 South Carolina Basketball star, Aliyah A. Boston.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the continued gender pay gap, unbalanced media coverage, and other forms of gender discrimination in sports, is it any wonder that on the eve of the ESPY Awards, women would once again be among the snubbed?<\/p><div id=\"first-2821755830\" class=\"first-content_3 first-entity-placement\"><!-- \/22950135888\/FAP_Article_Leaderboard_Instream4 -->\r\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1700414036595-0' style='min-width: 300px; min-height: 90px;'>\r\n  <script>\r\n    googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1700414036595-0'); });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unfortunately, the answer is no.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ESPN attempted to rationalize their decision <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestate.com\/sports\/college\/university-of-south-carolina\/usc-womens-basketball\/article263583253.html\">through a statement sent to The State<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have the utmost respect for Aliyah Boston, Dawn Staley and the South Carolina Gamecocks,\u201d said ESPN in their statement. \u201cDue to both COVID restrictions and a new venue with much less seating capacity than previous shows, \u2018The 2022 ESPYs\u2019 prioritized athlete invitations to focus on specific awards that will be handed out during the broadcast.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After feeling the heat of the backlash from major forces like <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/dawnstaley\/status\/1548777015972618240\">South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley<\/a>, ESPN issued a late invitation to Boston, which she &#8220;respectfully declined.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I thank God for continuing to bless me, for guiding my steps, and for the love and support of my family, fans and community. I would like to say congratulations <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/78jocelyn_alo?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@78jocelyn_alo<\/a> and all the ESPY winners\ud83c\udf89 I remain thankful in all things. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/BkO2iPA8YS\">pic.twitter.com\/BkO2iPA8YS<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Aliyah A. Boston (@aa_boston) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/aa_boston\/status\/1549788689588518913?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 20, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Boston\u2019s words hit hard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cTo every Black girl and Black woman&#8230;You matter. You are valuable. You are a priority.\u201d<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Far too often Black girls and women are the last ones to be thought of. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The last to be protected, cherished, or simply held.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our passion is interpreted as anger, and our continued survival against oppression is read <a href=\"https:\/\/firstandpen.com\/staging\/5861\/simone-biles-and-black-sportswomen-are-amazing-but-not-unbreakable\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">as superhuman strength<\/a>. Yet our accomplishments are as easily erased (disappeared) as we are. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We live in a world where a world-class WNBA player can be wrongfully detained after weeks of a media blackout and silence around her situation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that she happens to be a Black, lesbian, woman cannot be divorced from that reality. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We live in a world where COVID restrictions and seating limitations are blamed for omitting important invitees from events, like Boston at last night&#8217;s ESPYS. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We live in a world where Black women and girls go missing with little or no recourse.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Race, gender, sexuality, and class all still matter in sports and society writ large. Our lives at these intersections shape our lived reality, and for those of us who are Black women, we see the way the world reacts toward us, daily.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fact remains that with a seating capacity of 3,400 at the ESPY venue, the only Black collegiate woman athlete to be nominated for an award this year should have been present. And not through a backdoor invite offered for appearances sake. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In thinking about who and who not to include, in the climate that we are currently in, how this could have been overlooked? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Seems less like an oversight and more like a deliberate attempt to as Boston put it \u201cerase Black girls and women,\u201d from view.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, fifty years post-Title IX, we must really ask ourselves, how far have we come, how far left do we have to go, and are we still willing to put in the work to get there?&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Title IX celebrated its 50th anniversary last month.
