{"id":3743,"date":"2022-07-14T10:49:45","date_gmt":"2022-07-14T14:49:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/firstandpen.com\/staging\/5861\/?p=3743"},"modified":"2022-07-15T11:20:21","modified_gmt":"2022-07-15T15:20:21","slug":"phf-adds-montreal-team-helmed-by-president-kevin-raphael","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/firstandpen.com\/staging\/5861\/phf-adds-montreal-team-helmed-by-president-kevin-raphael\/","title":{"rendered":"PHF Adds Montreal Team Helmed By President Kevin Rapha\u00ebl"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Premier Hockey Federation (PHF) continues to grow, announcing earlier this week that a franchise in Montreal is joining the league for the 2022-23 season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The expanding league, formerly known as the National Women&#8217;s Hockey League (NWHL), had six teams prior to adding Montreal: the Buffalo Beauts, Boston Pride, Connecticut Whale, Metropolitan Riveters, Minnesota Whitecaps and the Toronto Six.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adding a seventh team strengthens the league&#8217;s presence in the hockey-loving country of Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is a very exciting time for the PHF and the growth of professional women\u2019s hockey,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.premierhockeyfederation.com\/news\/phf-launching-in-montreal-quebec-for-the-2022-23\">said Reagan Carey, PHF Commissioner.<\/a> \u201cThe city of Montreal and province of Quebec have a rich hockey history that the PHF is proud to officially be a part of.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Running the Montreal franchise will be new team President Kevin Rapha\u00ebl, a man whose leadership is matched by his energy and enthusiasm for the sport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019ve been working so hard for the past four years now to bring a team back in Montreal after what happened,\u201d said Rapha\u00ebl. \u201cI believe that we have the fan base and the infrastructure in the province of Quebec to support strongly a pro women\u2019s hockey team.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rapha\u00ebl, a long-time supporter of women&#8217;s hockey and a celebrity in the sport, was referring to the shuttering of the Canadian Women&#8217;s Hockey League (CWHL) in 2019, a moment that preceded the founding of the Professional Women\u2019s Hockey Players\u2019 Association (PWHPA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Listening to Rapha\u00ebl&#8217;s passion for hockey and his new team during the zoom press conference brought smiles to everyone&#8217;s faces.<\/p><div id=\"first-909809179\" class=\"first-content first-entity-placement\"><!-- \/22950135888\/FAP_Article_Leaderboard_Instream2 -->\r\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1700413625220-0' style='min-width: 300px; min-height: 90px;'>\r\n  <script>\r\n    googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1700413625220-0'); });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rapha\u00ebl&#8217;s hiring also illustrates the league&#8217;s continued diversity, particularly at the executive and ownership levels. That includes other leaders like Toronto Six owners Anthony Steward, Angela James, Bernice Carnegie and Ted Nolan, as well as Willie O&#8217;Ree, minority owner of the Boston Pride. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rapha\u00ebl pledged to do right by the players, parents, fans and friends, which instilled confidence in hockey fans that Montreal&#8217;s new team was in good hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;My mission is to make sure that we do right by the players,&#8221; said Rapha\u00ebl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s something he firmly believes and stands by. Yet he understands that the work leading up to the announcement is by no means done.<\/p><div id=\"first-138541142\" class=\"first-content_2 first-entity-placement\"><!-- \/22950135888\/FAP_Article_Leaderboard_Instream3 -->\r\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1700413989195-0' style='min-width: 300px; min-height: 90px;'>\r\n  <script>\r\n    googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1700413989195-0'); });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are many more challenges facing the team&#8217;s new president, but that doesn&#8217;t deter him in the least bit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We can&#8217;t stop ourselves from the challenge of doing something unique,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new franchise must now decide on the team&#8217;s name, logo, coaching staff, host arena\/s and build the general operations around the new franchise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And of course, no team would be complete without a roster, so they must also sign players.<\/p><div id=\"first-3749401674\" class=\"first-content_3 first-entity-placement\"><!-- \/22950135888\/FAP_Article_Leaderboard_Instream4 -->\r\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1700414036595-0' style='min-width: 300px; min-height: 90px;'>\r\n  <script>\r\n    googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1700414036595-0'); });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That isn&#8217;t something of great concern to Rapha\u00ebl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI don\u2019t think it\u2019s going be long before we start to sign players because I\u2019m telling you, a lot of people are hitting up my phone right now,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While there&#8217;s still lots to be done before the start of the season, a date which hasn&#8217;t been announced as of yet, Rapha\u00ebl is happy about what they&#8217;ve accomplished so far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cProfessional women&#8217;s hockey is back in Montreal, and Emmanuel and I are very excited to work with the PHF to help grow the women&#8217;s game across the entire province of Quebec,\u201d said Rapha\u00ebl. \u201cWe look forward to building a team with strong community partnerships and talented athletes who are ready to make a real difference on and off the ice.
