{"id":3576,"date":"2022-06-12T23:10:02","date_gmt":"2022-06-13T03:10:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/firstandpen.com\/staging\/5861\/?p=3576"},"modified":"2022-06-14T10:12:13","modified_gmt":"2022-06-14T14:12:13","slug":"jack-del-rios-right-to-free-speech-includes-the-right-to-get-checked","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/firstandpen.com\/staging\/5861\/jack-del-rios-right-to-free-speech-includes-the-right-to-get-checked\/","title":{"rendered":"Jack Del Rio&#8217;s Right To Free Speech Includes The Right To Get Checked"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the start of last week, Washington Commanders defensive coordinator <a href=\"https:\/\/firstandpen.com\/staging\/5861\/jack-del-rios-have-always-existed-in-sports-and-need-to-be-exposed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jack Del Rio decided to not stick to sports<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, he injected politics into sports by first bringing up the protests (from his now deleted Twitter account) after George Floyd&#8217;s murder in response to a tweet about the upcoming January 6th hearings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A few days later he doubled down on his ignorance by equating the attempted coup on January 6th to a &#8220;dust up.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Jack Del Rio said if his players were concerned about his comments, he&#39;d speak with them, but that &quot;they&#39;re not.&quot;<br><br>After the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/January6thHearings?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#January6thHearings<\/a> every Commanders player should all be waiting for him at practice tomorrow morning and take him to task for his &quot;dust up&quot; comment. 2\/5 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/fXUEvtQjS8\">pic.twitter.com\/fXUEvtQjS8<\/a><\/p>&mdash; First and Pen (@firstandpen) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/firstandpen\/status\/1535081012593455104?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 10, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI can look at images on the TV [of the Floyd protests] \u2014 people\u2019s livelihoods are being destroyed. Businesses are being burned down. No problem,\u201d said Del Rio. \u201cAnd then we have a dust-up at the Capitol, nothing burned down, and we\u2019re going to make that a major deal. I just think it\u2019s kind of two standards, and if we apply the same standard and we\u2019re going to be reasonable with each other, let\u2019s have a discussion.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Afterwards, Del Rio issued an apology (from his now deleted Twitter account), but only in respect to his &#8220;dust up&#8221; comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cReferencing that situation as a dust-up was irresponsible and negligent and I am sorry,\u201d tweeted Del Rio. \u201cI stand by my comments condemning violence in communities across the country. I say that while also expressing my support as an American citizen for peaceful protest in our country.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To be fair, Jack Del Rio has the right to say what he wants and the right to say what he feels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But guess what.<\/p><div id=\"first-242048730\" class=\"first-content first-entity-placement\"><!-- \/22950135888\/FAP_Article_Leaderboard_Instream2 -->\r\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1700413625220-0' style='min-width: 300px; min-height: 90px;'>\r\n  <script>\r\n    googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1700413625220-0'); });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That right comes with consequences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We, the people, have the right to respond to people who express their rights to free speech and expression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We have the right, and responsibility to check them when they&#8217;re incredibly and undenaibly wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this case, everyone definitely has the right to hold Jack Del Rio accountable for the ignorance he freely expressed.<\/p><div id=\"first-4229825758\" class=\"first-content_2 first-entity-placement\"><!-- \/22950135888\/FAP_Article_Leaderboard_Instream3 -->\r\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1700413989195-0' style='min-width: 300px; min-height: 90px;'>\r\n  <script>\r\n    googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1700413989195-0'); });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Del Rio was smug in his response to a reporter questioning him about his reference to the George Floyd murder protests prior to the January 6th hearings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His face was basically daring retorts from reporters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But like Mike Tyson told us, &#8220;Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jack wants to talk tough? Jack wants the smoke?<\/p><div id=\"first-1129974917\" class=\"first-content_3 first-entity-placement\"><!-- \/22950135888\/FAP_Article_Leaderboard_Instream4 -->\r\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1700414036595-0' style='min-width: 300px; min-height: 90px;'>\r\n  <script>\r\n    googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1700414036595-0'); });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No problem. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just be mindful of the repercussions, especially if you&#8217;re spouting lies, misinformation or unfactual truths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We all know January 6th was no dust-up. Far from it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was a blatant coup attempt, incited by one man, to overthrow our democratically elected government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was a vile, disgusting and violent movement fueled by hatred, ignorance and privilege whose participants injured, destroyed, stole and violated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some members even called for the deaths of Mike Pence and Nancy Pelosi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anyone denying what January 6th was, especially those in positions of power like members of congress and Jack Del Rio, deserves to be checked, held accountable and punished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s what the Commanders and head coach Ron Rivera did <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/firstandpen\/status\/1535334863166918659\">by fining him $100,000<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;After reflecting on the situation and circumstances, I have decided to fine Coach Del Rio $100,000, which the team will donate to the United States Capitol Police Memorial Fund,&#8221; stated Washington head coach Ron Rivera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Del Rio tried to diminish the significance of the January 6th coup and offered a weak apology after being ripped to shreds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then he tried to compare it to the protests after the murder of George Floyd. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is no comparison. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">None.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even Ed Reed, who rarely tweets, added his fury to the situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Today, im sick and tired! Its simple right and wrong, Wrong.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As expected the usual pundits came to Del Rio&#8217;s defense with cries of &#8220;First Amendment Rights.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some bizarrely brought Colin Kaepernick into the situation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Others believe Rivera fined Del Rio because his comments impacted their path at securing land for a new stadium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet &#8220;surprisingly&#8221;, none of these defenders told him to stick to sports. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But this is much bigger than a new stadium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is about right and wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jack Del Rio has the right to express his thoughts, but he was dead wrong about about what he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a result, he has the right to be chin checked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that&#8217;s definitely not wrong.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At the start of last week, Washington Commanders defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio decided to not stick to sports.
