{"id":3473,"date":"2022-05-19T15:38:20","date_gmt":"2022-05-19T19:38:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/firstandpen.com\/staging\/5861\/?p=3473"},"modified":"2022-05-24T08:34:56","modified_gmt":"2022-05-24T12:34:56","slug":"nick-saban-going-full-nino-brown-was-petty-and-hypocritical","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/firstandpen.com\/staging\/5861\/nick-saban-going-full-nino-brown-was-petty-and-hypocritical\/","title":{"rendered":"Nick Saban Going Full Nino Brown Was Petty And Hypocritical"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When Nick Saban is mad and wants to vent, it&#8217;s apparent he prefers to go scorched earth and take everyone down with him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s what we all witnessed on Wednesday night when Saban channeled his inner-Nino Brown and attacked his fellow coaching &#8220;Kareem Akbars&#8221; over alleged NIL and recruiting improprieties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At an event with local business leaders in Birmingham, Nino&#8230;.I mean Nick, first sounded off on fellow SEC member Texas A&amp;M.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I mean, we were second in recruiting last year,&#8221; ranted Saban. &#8220;A&amp;M was first. A&amp;M bought every player on their team &#8212; made a deal for name, image, likeness. We didn&#8217;t buy one player, all right? But I don&#8217;t know if we&#8217;re gonna be able to sustain that in the future because more and more people are doing it. It&#8217;s tough.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This isn&#8217;t the first time Texas A&amp;M was taken to task for recruiting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In February, Ole Miss&#8217; head coach Lane Kiffin took a swipe at the Aggies as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Texas A&amp;M was going to incur a luxury tax in how much they paid for their signing class,&#8221; quipped Kiffin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This also wasn&#8217;t Saban&#8217;s first attack on NIL and the new age of college recruiting.<\/p><div id=\"first-2778083931\" class=\"first-content first-entity-placement\"><!-- \/22950135888\/FAP_Article_Leaderboard_Instream2 -->\r\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1700413625220-0' style='min-width: 300px; min-height: 90px;'>\r\n  <script>\r\n    googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1700413625220-0'); });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/firstandpen.com\/staging\/5861\/nick-saban-criticizing-nil-as-a-way-to-buy-players-is-hilariously-hypocritical\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Last month Saban attacked the infant NIL system<\/a>, essentially stating it enables players to be bought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe concept of name, image and likeness was for players to be able to use their name, image and likeness to create opportunities for themselves. That\u2019s what it was,\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/nick-saban-current-nil-rules-creates-a-situation-where-you-can-basically-buy-players-203200737.html\">said Saban at the time<\/a>. \u201cSo last year on our team, our guys probably made as much or more than anybody in the country.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBut that creates a situation where you can basically buy players,\u201d Saban continued. \u201cYou can do it in recruiting. I mean, if that\u2019s what we want college football to be, I don\u2019t know. And you can also get players to get in the transfer portal to see if they can get more someplace else than they can get at your place.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His most recent attack is much harsher as he took direct aim at Texas A&amp;M with unsupported accusations. <\/p><div id=\"first-2790034759\" class=\"first-content_2 first-entity-placement\"><!-- \/22950135888\/FAP_Article_Leaderboard_Instream3 -->\r\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1700413989195-0' style='min-width: 300px; min-height: 90px;'>\r\n  <script>\r\n    googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1700413989195-0'); });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He blasted the Aggies with &#8220;alternative facts&#8221;, a tactic widely employed by supporters of the corrupt previous presidential administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just throw it out there and see if people will flock to agree, even if it lacks facts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To those of us with common sense and morals, Saban&#8217;s rambling sounds more like whining and petty, unsupported tattle-telling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why else start off by mentioning Alabama was second in recruiting to A&amp;M last year?<\/p><div id=\"first-609463585\" class=\"first-content_3 first-entity-placement\"><!-- \/22950135888\/FAP_Article_Leaderboard_Instream4 -->\r\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1700414036595-0' style='min-width: 300px; min-height: 90px;'>\r\n  <script>\r\n    googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1700414036595-0'); });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s where the bitterness commenced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Remember the Aggies shocked the Crimson Tide last season, handing them their first loss of the season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Don&#8217;t think that wasn&#8217;t on Saban&#8217;s mind as he was preparing his verbal bazooka for his competitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Saban called out how coaches can use the budget from the school&#8217;s collective- a group of program supporters who pool their resources to offer deals to athletes- to entice athletes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To him, the NIL system is just &#8220;coaches trying to create an advantage for themselves.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The hypocrisy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Saban Threw Stones In His Glass House<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Isn&#8217;t this what schools like Alabama, Texas and LSU partake in?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They construct multi-million locker rooms to entice recruits to play for the Crimson Tide, Longhorns or Tigers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Is that not what programs do when they leave conferences for bigger ones in order to reap the financial rewards of lucrative media deals?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Are those not advantageous for each program and coach?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Saban makes $9.5 million annually and escalation clauses ensure he&#8217;s the highest-paid coach in the sport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His quarterback, Bryce Young, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.saturdaydownsouth.com\/alabama-football\/bryce-young-nil-deals-alabama-crimson-tide-800000-million\/\">reportedly secured roughly $1 million in NIL deals<\/a> from brands like CashApp, Subway and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/college\/alabama\/bamacentral\/alabama-qb-bryce-young-nets-nil-deal-with-bmw-of-tuscaloosa\">BMW of Tuscaloosa.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And mind you, most of those deals came before he became a full-time starter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To be fair, Nick Saban&#8217;s gripe isn&#8217;t with players earning through NIL deals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I think it\u2019s a good thing that players now have an opportunity to work and make money through name, image and likeness,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/college\/alabama\/bamacentral\/alabama-qb-bryce-young-nets-nil-deal-with-bmw-of-tuscaloosa\">Saban said during this past National Signing Day<\/a>. &#8220;I would hope we come up with some system in the future where \u2013 and I\u2019m not accusing anybody of anything. But I don\u2019t think players should make a decision about where they go to school relative to how much money they\u2019re gonna make in name, image and likeness.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Apparently, Saban&#8217;s bile rises only when other programs outshine Alabama, for two months later, Saban made not one but two blatant accusations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After attacking the Aggies, Saban took aim at <a href=\"https:\/\/firstandpen.com\/staging\/5861\/?s=deion+sanders\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jackson St. and Deion Sanders<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Jackson State&nbsp;paid a guy $1 million last year that was a really good Division I player to come to the school. It was in the paper, and they bragged about it. Nobody did anything about it. I mean, these guys at Miami&nbsp;that are going to play basketball there for $400,000, it&#8217;s in the newspaper. The guy tells you how he&#8217;s doing it,&#8221; seethed Saban.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The player he referred to was Travis Hunter, who passed up his commitment to Florida State in favor of the Jackson St. Tigers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hunter&#8217;s decision, along with the one by fellow top recruit Kevin Coleman, who also chose Jackson State, enraged college football purists who raged over their decision to attend an HBCU instead of a P5 school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is why Nick Saban&#8217;s NIL\/recruiting rampage reeks of the bitterness over losing a few battles in the recruiting war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Response<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After Saban&#8217;s attack, Texas A&amp;M head football coach Jimbo Fisher vigorously defended his program and players.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Texas A&amp;M HC Jimbo Fisher just fired back at Nick Saban for saying they &quot;bought&quot; recruits.<br><br>Fisher calls Saban a &quot;narcissist&quot; and says he won&#39;t take his call. <br><br>&quot;We built him up to be this czar of football. Some people think they&#8217;re God. Go dig into how &#8216;God&#8217; did his deal. You may find out about a lot of things you don&#8217;t want to know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We build him up to be the czar of football. Go dig into his past or anybody that&#8217;s ever coached with him. You can find out anything you want to find out, what he does and how he does it. It&#8217;s despicable; it really is.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;You&#8217;re taking shots at 17-year-old kids and their families that they broke state laws, that we bought every player in this group,&#8221; said Fisher. &#8220;We never bought anybody. No rules were broken, nothing was done wrong. These families, it&#8217;s despicable that a reputable head coach can come out and say this when he doesn&#8217;t get his way or things don&#8217;t go his way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The narcissist in him doesn&#8217;t allow those things to happen.
