{"id":3334,"date":"2022-04-18T14:20:07","date_gmt":"2022-04-18T18:20:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/firstandpen.com\/staging\/5861\/?p=3334"},"modified":"2022-04-19T08:24:02","modified_gmt":"2022-04-19T12:24:02","slug":"marshawn-lynch-joins-ownership-group-of-nhls-seattle-kraken","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/firstandpen.com\/staging\/5861\/marshawn-lynch-joins-ownership-group-of-nhls-seattle-kraken\/","title":{"rendered":"Marshawn Lynch Joins Ownership Group Of NHL&#8217;s Seattle Kraken"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marshawn Lynch might not play on the NFL gridiron anymore, but he&#8217;s sure living his best life off of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today it was announced that Lynch, along with rapper Macklemore, joined the ownership group of the Seattle Kraken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Kraken, which joined the NHL this season after majority owner David Bonderman paid a $650 million expansion fee, is reportedly worth $875 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Terms of Lynch&#8217;s investment weren&#8217;t disclosed, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/04\/18\/marshawn-lynch-macklemore-join-seattle-kraken-ownership-group-in-nhl-.html\">but according to CNBC.com<\/a>, sports bankers estimate that these types of deals are &#8220;generally for 1% of a team or less.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Lynch, the percentage isn&#8217;t as important as is the fact that he&#8217;s made a personal dream come true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is something I never would have imagined,\u201d said Lynch in a statement. \u201cI always dreamed of playing on a professional team but owning one is something special. As I look back on some of my accomplishments \u2014 I retired before I was 30 and now being an owner of a professional club at the age of 35 \u2013 I\u2019m gonna continue to count my blessings.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the deal was just announced, it turns out that it was in the works for some time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to team CEO Tod Leiweke, it first bubbled up last summer but was finalized by the NHL this month.<\/p><div id=\"first-3438942672\" class=\"first-content first-entity-placement\"><!-- \/22950135888\/FAP_Article_Leaderboard_Instream2 -->\r\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1700413625220-0' style='min-width: 300px; min-height: 90px;'>\r\n  <script>\r\n    googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1700413625220-0'); });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFor us, we didn\u2019t need additional investors, but the thing that attracted us to these guys was their interest in community activism through this organization, and that\u2019s a big deal,\u201d said Leiweke, who&#8217;s also a Kraken investor, in a CNBC interview. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Kraken said that Lynch would help drive the NHL&#8217;s push for diversity and awareness by participating in their &#8220;Hockey is for Everyone&#8221; initiative. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/firstandpen.com\/staging\/5861\/?s=nhl\">Hockey&#8217;s push for inclusion<\/a> is something that&#8217;s escalated over the last few years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From Black and <a href=\"https:\/\/firstandpen.com\/staging\/5861\/bipoc-group-purchases-toronto-six-of-premier-hockey-federation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BIPOC team owners<\/a> to Black hockey history making events like <a href=\"https:\/\/firstandpen.com\/staging\/5861\/black-on-ice-officiating-duo-make-nhl-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the NHL&#8217;s first Black on-ice officiating duo<\/a> and the league&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/firstandpen.com\/staging\/5861\/seattle-kraken-to-make-nhl-history-with-all-black-broadcast-team\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">first Black broadcast team (which was, ironically, the Seattle Krakens&#8217; broadcast team)<\/a>, the sport has taken positive steps forward to become more welcoming to diverse audiences and players. <\/p><div id=\"first-2199218\" class=\"first-content_2 first-entity-placement\"><!-- \/22950135888\/FAP_Article_Leaderboard_Instream3 -->\r\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1700413989195-0' style='min-width: 300px; min-height: 90px;'>\r\n  <script>\r\n    googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1700413989195-0'); });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lynch is always there for the community, but he will also be paying close attention to the business side of his new team, and that means he&#8217;ll be backfield mates with Leiweke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe\u2019s intrigued with the idea of what\u2019s it\u2019s like to be an owner and the business side and the financing,\u201d Leiweke said. \u201cAnd it will be a thrill taking him on that journey.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lynch is beloved by Seattle for all that he did during his time with the Seahawks, and now he&#8217;s given fans another reason to further embrace him.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Marshawn Lynch might not play on the NFL gridiron anymore, but he&#8217;s sure living his best life off of it.
