I\u2019m extremely humbled to be named the head coach for <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LouisvilleMBB?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@LouisvilleMBB<\/a> &amp; thankful to share today with my family &amp; my brothers. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/2oCMi8eASy\">pic.twitter.com\/2oCMi8eASy<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Kenny Payne (@coachkennypayne) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/coachkennypayne\/status\/1504883821984026628?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 18, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Payne played for the Cardinals from 1985 to 1989 under coach Denny Crum and scored 1,089 points in his career. He was also a freshman on the Cardinals&#8217; 1986 national championship squad that was led by super frosh, &#8220;Never Nervous&#8221; Pervis Ellison. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now he returns to the Cardinals on a six-year deal that runs through the 2027-28 season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I don&#8217;t have all the answers,&#8221; Payne said to the crowd after asking them to stand with him. &#8220;but I know what I have to take this job and try to help build the answers. I&#8217;m one person. I&#8217;m not standing here by myself again. I&#8217;m not standing here by myself.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Payne spent 10 years with John Calipari at Kentucky, five at Oregon and the last two years with the Knicks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now the 55-year-old returns home as the program&#8217;s first Black head coach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;To accept the job at the University of Louisville, it took a lot to get to this point,&#8221; Payne said. &#8220;I say, give me the worst-case scenario. Don&#8217;t give it your best [case]. I know what the best is. Give me the worst. I understand what that means.&#8221;<\/p><div id=\"first-1820678034\" class=\"first-content first-entity-placement\"><!-- \/22950135888\/FAP_Article_Leaderboard_Instream2 -->\r\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1700413625220-0' style='min-width: 300px; min-height: 90px;'>\r\n  <script>\r\n    googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1700413625220-0'); });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s good he recognizes the worst because he&#8217;s walking into a very tough situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He&#8217;s heading up a program that finished 13-18 last season and is facing possible NCAA penalties stemming from a 2017 federal corruption investigation of college basketball.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This means Payne faces the same dilemma many Black NFL head coaches face- <a href=\"https:\/\/firstandpen.com\/staging\/5861\/black-nfl-coaches-lionel-taylor-sometimes-next-is-never\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the role of the cleanup man<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/firstandpen.com\/staging\/5861\/david-culley-faces-the-perfect-storm-a-familiar-role-for-many-black-nfl-head-coaches\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">They take over teams that are in a state of disarray<\/a>, right the ship and then are fired after the hard work is done. <\/p><div id=\"first-410939896\" class=\"first-content_2 first-entity-placement\"><!-- \/22950135888\/FAP_Article_Leaderboard_Instream3 -->\r\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1700413989195-0' style='min-width: 300px; min-height: 90px;'>\r\n  <script>\r\n    googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1700413989195-0'); });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We saw that this past season with <a href=\"https:\/\/firstandpen.com\/staging\/5861\/the-nfl-reminds-black-head-coaches-they-can-clean-up-but-not-lead\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the Texans and David Culley and the Dolphins with Brian Flores<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hopefully, this doesn&#8217;t happen to Kenny Payne, especially because he played for the university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But with the response he&#8217;s received so far, it seems like the program and its supporters are firmly behind him and want him to succeed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;After a thorough national search during which we sat down with a number of expectational coaches, it was clear that Kenny Payne was what we need,&#8221; said interim Director of Athletics Josh Heird.<\/p><div id=\"first-2051543410\" class=\"first-content_3 first-entity-placement\"><!-- \/22950135888\/FAP_Article_Leaderboard_Instream4 -->\r\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1700414036595-0' style='min-width: 300px; min-height: 90px;'>\r\n  <script>\r\n    googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1700414036595-0'); });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kenny Payne knows what he&#8217;s facing and is ready for the challenge. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;While there are challenges, I see opportunities, and if we are united and aligned, there is nothing that we cannot accomplish,&#8221; said Payne. &#8220;Our fans and community deserve a championship basketball program fueled by exceptional and high-character student-athletes, and it is my responsibility to deliver on that vision.
