{"id":3092,"date":"2022-02-28T08:32:11","date_gmt":"2022-02-28T13:32:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/firstandpen.com\/staging\/5861\/?p=3092"},"modified":"2022-02-28T08:32:39","modified_gmt":"2022-02-28T13:32:39","slug":"tennessee-state-nashville-predators-to-raise-funds-for-hbcu-ice-hockey-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/firstandpen.com\/staging\/5861\/tennessee-state-nashville-predators-to-raise-funds-for-hbcu-ice-hockey-program\/","title":{"rendered":"Tennessee State, Predators To Raise Money For HBCU Hockey Program"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tennessee State made headlines when they announced they were looking to start an ice hockey program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mikki Allen, Tennessee State&#8217;s athletics director, made the announcement with Nashville Predators President and CEO Sean Henry, who will help raise money for the Tigers to launch the first NCAA Division I HBCU men&#8217;s and women&#8217;s ice hockey teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We have tremendous partnerships with the NHL and Sean Henry and the Predators&nbsp;behind us 110%,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennessean.com\/story\/sports\/2022\/02\/25\/tennessee-state-fundraising-campaign-start-ice-hockey-team-ncaa-hbcu-nashville-predators-nhl\/6850388001\/\">said Allen to the Tennessean<\/a>. &#8220;Now we are assembling a TSU Friends of Hockey Fundraising Team. We are looking for other corporations. It could be a private gift out there or a public gift that could really help ignite this and propel us to where this becomes a reality. &#8220;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The announcement took place during the NHL Black History Tour Museum&#8217;s stop at Tennessee State, the perfect opportunity to add more Black history to the ice. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goal is exciting, but funding, maintaining and growing an ice hockey program isn&#8217;t cheap. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The school will need lots of money to cover scholarships, an arena, equipment, travel and other operational expenses. That&#8217;s why having an NHL team&#8217;s assistance is so important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But it&#8217;s not a spur of the moment decision. They&#8217;ve been discussing and exploring the idea since last spring. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;It&#8217;s a substantial investment; it&#8217;s not a cheap sport to play at the grassroot level,&#8221; he said. &#8220;And it&#8217;s not a sport that you can not fund at a high level if you want to do it right.&#8221;<\/p><div id=\"first-4260816847\" class=\"first-content first-entity-placement\"><!-- \/22950135888\/FAP_Article_Leaderboard_Instream2 -->\r\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1700413625220-0' style='min-width: 300px; min-height: 90px;'>\r\n  <script>\r\n    googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1700413625220-0'); });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Tigers have made some big moves over the last year that thrust their program into the national spotlight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hercy Miller, Master P&#8217;s son, played on their basketball team but later<a href=\"https:\/\/firstandpen.com\/staging\/5861\/is-master-ps-pulling-hercy-miller-out-of-tennessee-st-good-or-bad-for-hbcus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> withdrew from the school<\/a> after his father disagreed with the treatment Hercy received for an injury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Tigers also signed <a href=\"https:\/\/firstandpen.com\/staging\/5861\/eddie-george-officially-introduced-as-head-football-coach-at-tennessee-st\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Eddie George as their head football coach<\/a> and revealed their desire to eventually move up to the FBS level. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These national headline-grabbing moves added to the renewed attention received by HBCU athletic programs.<\/p><div id=\"first-401850807\" class=\"first-content_2 first-entity-placement\"><!-- \/22950135888\/FAP_Article_Leaderboard_Instream3 -->\r\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1700413989195-0' style='min-width: 300px; min-height: 90px;'>\r\n  <script>\r\n    googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1700413989195-0'); });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From <a href=\"https:\/\/firstandpen.com\/staging\/5861\/deion-sanders-awakens-the-sleeping-giant-of-hbcu-football\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Deion Sanders at Jackson State<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/firstandpen.com\/staging\/5861\/hue-jackson-officially-introduced-as-gramblings-new-head-coach\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hue Jackson at Grambling<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/firstandpen.com\/staging\/5861\/morgan-state-revives-wrestling-becomes-sole-hbcu-wrestling-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Morgan State<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/gobstate.com\/news\/2021\/12\/6\/bluefield-state-adds-womens-wrestling-bringing-number-of-varsity-sports-to-23.aspx\">Bluefield State<\/a> adding men&#8217;s and women&#8217;s wrestling teams, respectively, and <a href=\"https:\/\/firstandpen.com\/staging\/5861\/fisk-university-starting-first-hbcu-womens-gymnastics-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fisk adding women&#8217;s gymnastics<\/a>, HBCUs are taking major strides in college athletics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now Tennesse State is trying to break into ice hockey, <a href=\"https:\/\/firstandpen.com\/staging\/5861\/?s=hockey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a sport with a checkered history in regards to race<\/a>, and become the first Division I HBCU institution to field men&#8217;s and women&#8217;s teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Henry feels that if anyone can do it, Tennessee State can, which is why he&#8217;s throwing his support behind the Tigers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I&#8217;ve worked with a lot of schools in my career and they&#8217;re all wonderful, but a lot of times you meet people that are &#8216;no&#8217; people,&#8221; said Henry. &#8220;They&#8217;re like, &#8216;Oh we could do it, but, but, but&#8230;&#8217; You talk to the leadership on this campus and it&#8217;s &#8216;Yes, we will do it.
