That made him the sole Black head coach in North American professional hockey. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Saturday night, Jason Payne had his second &#8220;first&#8221; of his career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a hard-fought game Saturday night in Indianapolis, the Cyclones scored a tie-breaking goal in the third period, giving them a 3-2 victory over the Indy Fuel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"und\" dir=\"ltr\">1-0 !!!!!!!!!!!! <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/mDL4ryZiTa\">pic.twitter.com\/mDL4ryZiTa<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Cincinnati Cyclones (@CincyCyclones) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CincyCyclones\/status\/1452086396190183430?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 24, 2021<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That gave Payne his first win as a pro head coach. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Definitely an emotional evening,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oursportscentral.com\/services\/releases\/cyclones-win-debut-game-under-coach-payne\/n-5757709\">said Payne<\/a>. &#8220;I thought the boys played really hard for each other, but it really means a lot to me that they worked as hard as they did. It&#8217;s great to come out with a victory.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Toronto native, the 46-year-old Payne played professionally for 14-years before becoming a coach. During his career, he played in six different leagues and for 25 teams between 1995 and 2009. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Payne feels his career can bring him closer to his players as he understands their mindset and the uncertainties of a pro career.<\/p><div id=\"first-3844925882\" class=\"first-content first-entity-placement\"><!-- \/22950135888\/FAP_Article_Leaderboard_Instream2 -->\r\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1700413625220-0' style='min-width: 300px; min-height: 90px;'>\r\n  <script>\r\n    googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1700413625220-0'); });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I was never drafted, I was always a free agent,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhl.com\/news\/jason-payne-debuts-as-cincinnati-coach-in-echl\/c-327202660\">said Payne<\/a>. &#8220;I never had the luxury of having a long-term contract or knowing where I&#8217;m going to play the following winter. These are things I can share with the players and relate on how I coped with it, dealt with it and help them through it and guide them through it.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Saturday night, he guided his new team to their first win.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I&#8217;m happy, it&#8217;s definitely an honor,&#8221; said the new head coach. &#8220;I put some time in this game at the playing and at the coaching level constantly learning, constantly developing, proving to people that I deserve to be where I am today.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Payne has paid his dues during his ascension from player to coach.<\/p><div id=\"first-1152813415\" class=\"first-content_2 first-entity-placement\"><!-- \/22950135888\/FAP_Article_Leaderboard_Instream3 -->\r\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1700413989195-0' style='min-width: 300px; min-height: 90px;'>\r\n  <script>\r\n    googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1700413989195-0'); });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He entered the coaching ranks in 2010 as an assistant in the Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was hired by the Cyclones in 2018 as an assistant and was promoted to head coach when former head coach, Matt Thomas, left for the Providence Bruins of the AHL.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now it&#8217;s Payne&#8217;s show and he plans to demonstrate his talents in hopes of securing a head coaching job in the NHL, where, as we wrote previously<a href=\"https:\/\/firstandpen.com\/staging\/5861\/jason-payne-black-head-hockey-coach-cincinnati-cyclones-echl-north-america\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">,<\/a> &#8220;there hasn&#8217;t been a Black coach since Dirk Graham became the first and led the Chicago Blackhawks for 59 games in 1998-99.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI know how hard I worked to play pro hockey for 14 years, and try to make it to the NHL,\u201d said Payne when he was promoted. \u201cI only made it to the AHL.
