Payne is currently the only BIPOC head coach in professional hockey and fifth person of color overall to hold the position.<br><br>\ud83d\uddde: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/lkY3wL5crG\">https:\/\/t.co\/lkY3wL5crG<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/CincyCyclones?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#CincyCyclones<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/T5FzMnGn1O\">pic.twitter.com\/T5FzMnGn1O<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Cincinnati Cyclones (@CincyCyclones) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CincyCyclones\/status\/1432765541484269578?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 31, 2021<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s a move Payne hopes inspires others who love hockey and look like him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;It&#8217;s important for younger players to see familiar faces, saying, &#8216;Yeah, maybe I can be the guy behind the bench, maybe I can be someone in hockey operations, maybe I can be a video coach,'&#8221; said Payne to ESPN. &#8220;The more you see the faces the more it sheds light on the opportunities that are possible.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 45-year-old head coach grew up in Toronto as a hockey fan. He played professionally for 14 years and even made it to the ACL.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I know how hard I worked to play pro hockey for 14 years, and try to make it to the NHL,&#8221; said Payne. &#8220;I only made it to the AHL. But if I fought that hard to play, why would I not fight just as hard, if not harder, in coaching?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jason Payne followed Matt Thomas to the Cyclones when he was hired as their head coach in 2018. <\/p><div id=\"first-2036180703\" class=\"first-content first-entity-placement\"><!-- \/22950135888\/FAP_Article_Leaderboard_Instream2 -->\r\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1700413625220-0' style='min-width: 300px; min-height: 90px;'>\r\n  <script>\r\n    googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1700413625220-0'); });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under their leadership, the team was 89-30-12-4 and made the postseason twice. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yesterday Thomas was hired by the Providence Bruins of the AHL, opening the door for Jason Payne&#8217;s ascent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cJason is more than ready to take over the helm for our team and I am proud to offer him this opportunity,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/cycloneshockey.com\/news\/2021\/08\/jason-payne-named-cyclones-head-coach\">said Cyclones Vice President and General Manager Kristin Ropp.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Payne is the sixth head coach in Cyclones&#8217; history and their first coach of color.<\/p><div id=\"first-1265294017\" class=\"first-content_2 first-entity-placement\"><!-- \/22950135888\/FAP_Article_Leaderboard_Instream3 -->\r\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1700413989195-0' style='min-width: 300px; min-height: 90px;'>\r\n  <script>\r\n    googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1700413989195-0'); });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s a role he understands the significance of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;There weren&#8217;t many Black coaches as I was coming up, but when there were, you took notice,&#8221; said Payne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jason Payne entered the coaching ranks in 2010 as an assistant in the Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He follows in the footsteps of other history-making hockey coaches like Ed Wright, Dirk Graham, and Kelsey Koelzer.<\/p><div id=\"first-4263797091\" class=\"first-content_3 first-entity-placement\"><!-- \/22950135888\/FAP_Article_Leaderboard_Instream4 -->\r\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1700414036595-0' style='min-width: 300px; min-height: 90px;'>\r\n  <script>\r\n    googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1700414036595-0'); });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1970, Wright became <a href=\"https:\/\/ubbulls.com\/news\/2021\/2\/5\/ubs-ed-wright-was-college-hockeys-first-black-head-coach.aspx\">the first Black collegiate hockey coach<\/a> when he was hired by the University of Buffalo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Graham was hired by the Chicago Blackhawks in 1998, becoming the NHL&#8217;s first, and only, Black head coach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And this past May, <a href=\"https:\/\/firstandpen.com\/staging\/5861\/meet-kelsey-koelzer-the-first-black-ice-hockey-head-coach-in-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kelsey Koelzer<\/a> became the first Black female head hockey coach in history when she took the job at Arcadia University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jason Payne has his first head coaching job but has no plans of stopping there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019d love to coach in the NHL, it would be a great achievement,\u201d said Payne in <a href=\"https:\/\/colorofhockey.com\/2018\/09\/26\/more-black-coaches-begin-their-climb-up-pro-hockeys-ladder-in-the-2018-19-season\/\">an interview with William Douglas of The Color Of Hockey<\/a>. \u201cTo get there, you\u2019ve got to pay your dues, earn your way there, show that you can work and grind it out.
