It was his country\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kyivpost.com\/sport\/ukrainian-wrestler-beleniuk-wins-gold-at-tokyo-olympics.html\">sole Tokyo Olympic gold medal<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"uk\" dir=\"ltr\">\u041f\u0438\u0448\u0430\u0454\u043c\u043e\u0441\u044f \ud83d\udc9b\ud83d\udc99 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ZY7Lkp4tOX\">pic.twitter.com\/ZY7Lkp4tOX<\/a><\/p>&mdash; \u041d\u0412 (@tweetsNV) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tweetsNV\/status\/1422920441241419779?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 4, 2021<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the win by the Ukrainian Greco-Roman wrestler holds even more significance than the medal count.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You see, Beleniuk is a gold medal winner, Afro-Ukrainian, and the first Black member of the Ukrainian Parliament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 30-year-old represents a country and region we tend to ignore when it comes to conversations about Black athletes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beleniuk&#8217;s story highlights the history of the Cold War and transnational contact between Soviet citizens and African students in the Soviet Union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Between the 1950s and late 1980s, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/00083968.2020.1841012?journalCode=rcas20\">thousands of African students<\/a> moved to the Soviet Union, including Ukraine, to pursue their degrees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While uncommon, many African students had relationships and families with Soviet citizens. Their children are now visible representations of this unique period in Eastern European and African history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Zhan Vensanovych Beleniuk is one of these children.<\/p><div id=\"first-2696383810\" class=\"first-content first-entity-placement\"><!-- \/22950135888\/FAP_Article_Leaderboard_Instream2 -->\r\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1700413625220-0' style='min-width: 300px; min-height: 90px;'>\r\n  <script>\r\n    googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1700413625220-0'); });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/20190716-ukraine-mixed-race-wrestler-tackles-prejudice-run-parliament\">His mother is Ukrainian.<\/a> His father was a Rwandan student studying in Ukraine. He returned home to fight in his country\u2019s devastating civil war and was killed in 2001 when Beleniuk was 10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Raised by his mother and grandmother, Beleniuk&#8217;s childhood mirrored the experiences of many Afro-Ukrainian and Afro-Russians whose African fathers died or left the former Soviet Union to return to their homelands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Long before his Olympic victory, he showed promise in Greco-Roman wrestling. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kyivpost.com\/ukraine-politics\/zhan-beleniuk-champion-wrestler-refuses-better-offers-abroad-to-stay-at-home-i-belong-here.html\">By age 10<\/a>, when most children are still trying their luck at various sports, Beleniuk found his path. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He is one of Ukraine\u2019s most decorated athletes. He won gold in Tokyo, silver at the 2016 Games in Rio, and <a href=\"https:\/\/olympics.com\/tokyo-2020\/olympic-games\/en\/results\/wrestling\/athlete-profile-n1330685-beleniuk-zhan.htm#milestones\">multiple<\/a> World and European championship titles.<\/p><div id=\"first-2817973724\" class=\"first-content_2 first-entity-placement\"><!-- \/22950135888\/FAP_Article_Leaderboard_Instream3 -->\r\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1700413989195-0' style='min-width: 300px; min-height: 90px;'>\r\n  <script>\r\n    googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1700413989195-0'); });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Outside of his wrestling prowess, Beleniuk serves as a member of Ukraine\u2019s Verkhovna Rada (Parliament). He was elected in 2019, running as a member of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky\u2019s \u201cServant of the People\u201d party ticket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet despite the accolades he earned by proudly representing his country, Beleniuk, like many other <a href=\"http:\/\/bunews.com.ua\/lifestyle\/item\/afro-ukrainians-after-euromaidan\">Afro-Ukrainians<\/a>, has long been the target of racism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Racism and the Afro-Ukrainian<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Growing up in Kyiv, Beleniuk&#8217;s skin color led to many conflicts with classmates. Yet as an adult sports superstar and politician, Beleniuk has taken divergent positions on racism in Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last summer, when America was embroiled in the anti-police brutality protests after the murder of George Floyd, Beleniuk and other Black Ukrainian residents <a href=\"https:\/\/hromadske.ua\/posts\/ya-kazhu-sho-z-detrojtu-i-lyudi-odrazu-dumayut-sho-ya-bandit-5-istorij-pro-rasizm-v-ukrayini\">spoke to <em>Hromadske<\/em><\/a> about their experiences.<\/p><div id=\"first-927024560\" class=\"first-content_3 first-entity-placement\"><!-- \/22950135888\/FAP_Article_Leaderboard_Instream4 -->\r\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1700414036595-0' style='min-width: 300px; min-height: 90px;'>\r\n  <script>\r\n    googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1700414036595-0'); });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He felt racism did not affect him as he refused to let it. But he did say he was called a monkey or the n-word in media publications and on social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf there is a publication about me, there will be people who will write: \u2018monkey&#8221; or &#8220;ni**er\u2019.&nbsp;I see such comments, but I do not take them into account, I will not be affected by this,\u201d stated Beleniuk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For him, racism exists in Ukraine but it\u2019s different than what\u2019s experienced in the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRacism is also different.&nbsp;Some people are accustomed to the fact that the word &#8220;Negro&#8221; is constantly used.&nbsp;That is, they may unknowingly insult because they are used to black people being called &#8220;blacks,&#8221; so they continue to do so,\u201d said Beleniuk.&nbsp;\u201cWhen I say that it is more correct to say &#8220;black man&#8221;, they are surprised.&nbsp;I do not consider it racism, it is ignorance of people, they do not put any negative meaning into this word.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBut there are also people who profess a certain ideology, they have hatred for people with different skin color. There can be no tolerance for racism.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite these incidents, Beleniuk remains optimistic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe level of racism has decreased in recent years, and I think this is due to the fact that our people have started to leave more often.&nbsp;Ignorance is the cause of racism.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That ignorance played appeared when he announced his candidacy for parliament in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiosvoboda.org\/a\/beleniuk-chepurnyj\/29991845.html\">Vasyl Chepurny<\/a>, a correspondent for the official publication of the Ukrainian parliament, posted a screed (a long speech) that called Beleniuk a \u201cNegro\u201d and other derogatory terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many Ukrainian public figures, publications, and citizens came to Beleniuk\u2019s defense. But Cherpurny\u2019s attack reflects the tension within Ukrainian society toward Black Ukrainians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2012, Afro-Ukrainian singer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-18162443\">Gaitana<\/a> was slated to represent Ukraine in Eurovision. But she was victimized by public displays of racism and outrage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some claimed she couldn&#8217;t be Ukrainian because of her skin color.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gaitana, like Beleniuk, has a Ukrainian mother and an African father. They met while he was a student in Ukraine during the Soviet period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beleniuk and Gaitana represent the intersection of race, the Cold War, and contemporary culture in Ukraine and Eastern Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a>Afro-Ukrainians and Black residents <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/posteverything\/wp\/2015\/01\/02\/a-cop-in-ukraine-said-he-was-detaining-me-because-i-was-black-i-appreciated-it\/\">continue to face racism<\/a> and discrimination in their own country while pushing for Ukrainian participation in the European Union and NATO.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/zhanbeleniuk\">Beleniuk discussed<\/a> being called a &#8220;black money&#8221; when he returned home after the Tokyo Olympics. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beleniuk is the country\u2019s first wrestling gold medal winner since 1996.
