Politics and bickering aside, boxing is special.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But lately, entertainment has exploited and denegrated the proud sport.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This weekend another example of this humiliating trend occurred when Lamar Odom stepped back into the ring and, once again, made a mockery of the &#8220;Sweet Science.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This time Odom faced J-Lo&#8217;s ex-husband, Ojani Noa, in a pathetic three-round event that was worse than watching a middle school fight by the flagpole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Odom was flailing punches that would make the Rock &#8217;em, Sock &#8217;em robots cringe and hang their heads in shame. In one pitiful exchange at the end, he connected more with his wrist than with the glove!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not to be left out, a winded Noa literally walked around the ring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not jogged. <\/p><div id=\"first-2738587558\" class=\"first-content first-entity-placement\"><!-- \/22950135888\/FAP_Article_Leaderboard_Instream2 -->\r\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1700413625220-0' style='min-width: 300px; min-height: 90px;'>\r\n  <script>\r\n    googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1700413625220-0'); });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Walked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The event featured a &#8220;ref&#8221; straight out of the barbershop. He wore a sleeveless hoodie and baseball cap, the latter of which should have been prohibited for safety reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the &#8220;fight&#8221;, which is astoundingly generously to call it that, was almost as bad as Odom&#8217;s fight against Aaron Carter in June.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Lamar Odom with the first round knockdown of Aaron Carter <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Ulh6A1ShW2\">pic.twitter.com\/Ulh6A1ShW2<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Mismatch (@MismatchSports) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MismatchSports\/status\/1403553042839097354?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 12, 2021<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 6&#8217;10&#8221; Odom was reminiscent of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar facing Bruce Lee <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=NVq8ONHZaJg\">in &#8220;Game of Death.&#8221;<\/a><\/p><div id=\"first-1021390943\" class=\"first-content_2 first-entity-placement\"><!-- \/22950135888\/FAP_Article_Leaderboard_Instream3 -->\r\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1700413989195-0' style='min-width: 300px; min-height: 90px;'>\r\n  <script>\r\n    googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1700413989195-0'); });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this case, Odom made both opponents look like members of the lollipop guild.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even worse is the fact that Odom was originally supposed to face 54-year-old former professional boxer, Riddick Bowe. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bowe was ultimately removed from the card, a smart move after watching Evander Holyfield&#8217;s humiliating demise against Vitor Belfort last month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was heartbreaking to watch the 58-year-old former champion in the ring and it should never have happened in the first place.<\/p><div id=\"first-2871353011\" class=\"first-content_3 first-entity-placement\"><!-- \/22950135888\/FAP_Article_Leaderboard_Instream4 -->\r\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1700414036595-0' style='min-width: 300px; min-height: 90px;'>\r\n  <script>\r\n    googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1700414036595-0'); });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Boxing is not a game. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You don&#8217;t play at boxing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The event promoters should be ashamed that they pursued Holyfield and Bowe, much less continue to promote these boxing abominations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Official Celebrity Boxing, promoters of the Odom event, only removed Bowe from the card after pressure from boxing organizations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their CEO Damon Feldman issued a statement last month regarding Bowe&#8217;s involvement.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOfficial Celebrity Boxing prides itself on being a safe, fan-friendly, and low-impact alternative form of boxing entertainment. As such, all of our celebrity fighters are required to wear protective head gear and over-sized boxing gloves to addresses the inherent dangers normally associated with a professional boxing match. We fully understand the commissions\u2019 concerns and know that nothing is more important than the continued safety of our participants. For those reasons, we will be announcing a replacement for Riddick Bowe in our Celebrity Boxing Miami 2021 event on Oct. 2.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One look at Bowe&#8217;s shadowboxing video and you&#8217;ll understand why he has no business in the ring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Here\u2019s Riddick Bowe, in preparation for his upcoming fight, and he\u2019s being told \u201cgood job\u201d This makes me feel sick, another man should be no where near a boxing ring  <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/loudibella?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@loudibella<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/spPFBF85Uv\">pic.twitter.com\/spPFBF85Uv<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Daniel \ud83e\udd4a\ud83e\udd4a (@TerrySilver1989) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TerrySilver1989\/status\/1439367005560360966?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 18, 2021<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While there&#8217;s obviously a fanbase clamoring for these events, a travesty into itself, the promoters are treading in dangerous waters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eventually, someone will get hurt, and hurt bad. It&#8217;s inevitable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even with headgear, all it takes is one inadvertent rabbit punch and their lives can change immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Look at what happened to Pritchard Colon. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2015, life changed in an instant for the promising fighter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was hit with multiple rabbit punches, suffered a brain bleed, and went into a coma for more than 200 days. Now he&#8217;s permanently injured and needs constant care to eat, walk and talk.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s a shame that media outlets cover these events and actually give them exposure and analysis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tmz.com\/2021\/10\/03\/lamar-odom-beats-jennifer-lopez-ex-husband-ojani-noah-celebrity-boxing-match-called-out-benzino\/\">one publication to say<\/a> that Odom &#8220;looked considerably better than in his first fight in June against&nbsp;Aaron Carter&#8221; is laughable. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The only way to describe his performance is that he simply went from horrible to horrible &#8220;light.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This adds to the current trend of boxing entertainment made popular by <a href=\"https:\/\/firstandpen.com\/staging\/5861\/?s=jake+paul\">the Paul brothers<\/a>, and it&#8217;s something that needs to be scrutinized a lot more. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Social media influencers use their follower clout as a qualifier to enter the ring, where clicks and views amount to nothing when you&#8217;re getting punched in the face. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To be fair to the Pauls, at least they train and have real boxers on their cards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But these particular types of celebrity events are a ridiculous trend and it&#8217;s a shame that they&#8217;re chosen boxing as the sport to exploit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It doesn&#8217;t deserve it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Odom&#8217;s latest fight, a card that included former welterweight champion Paulie \u201cMagic Man\u201d Malignaggi against TikTok star Corey B, is boxing&#8217;s wake-up call that it needs to schedule more big fights so fight fans are not exposed to these PPV monstrosities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then fight fans can watch Errol Spence fight Terence Crawford instead of seeing ridiculous highlights of Lamar Odom vs. Benzino. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Boxing is exciting.
