Some exhaled and succumbed to their emotions. Others took to social media to sprout their ignorant, racist venom. Yet no matter the words of the trolls, the day would not be tarnished for everyone who waited so long for the legal system to finally punish law enforcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the world of sports, the reactions were overwhelmingly positive. But some were woefully frustrating, limited, and embarrassing. None more so than the tweet by the Las Vegas Raiders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"und\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/eeWbMYHK3U\">pic.twitter.com\/eeWbMYHK3U<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Las Vegas Raiders (@Raiders) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Raiders\/status\/1384650781672939521?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 20, 2021<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As soon as it went up, the Twitter responses came flooding in, telling the team to take the tweet down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While some tried to point out that the statement was meant to be a tribute, the more understanding voices shut them down. They pointed out how bad it was, using images of NYPD supporters wearing shirts stating &#8220;I can breathe&#8221;, which was a direct mockery of a choking Eric Garner, who slowly died at the hands of a NY police officer who was choking him out for selling cigarettes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After people condemned the Raiders&#8217; actions, team owner Mark Davis stated that it was his idea and that he didn&#8217;t mean any harm by it. Instead, it was meant as a nod to Floyd&#8217;s brother Philonise, who stated following Tuesday&#8217;s verdict, &#8220;Today, we are able to breathe again.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I felt that was a powerful statement,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/story\/_\/id\/31298644\/las-vegas-raiders-face-backlash-breathe-tweet-following-derek-chauvin-conviction\">said Davis<\/a>. &#8220;Today was a day where I can breathe, and we can all breathe again because justice was served. But we have a lot of work to do still on social justice and police brutality.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Per ESPN, Davis told the network that he &#8220;meant no disrespect&#8221; to the Floyd family. Yet despite the backlash, he refused to take the tweet down.<\/p><div id=\"first-481184777\" class=\"first-content first-entity-placement\"><!-- \/22950135888\/FAP_Article_Leaderboard_Instream2 -->\r\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1700413625220-0' style='min-width: 300px; min-height: 90px;'>\r\n  <script>\r\n    googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1700413625220-0'); });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over in hockey, the NHL tweeted out their own generic statement which essentially said nothing impactful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">National Hockey League Statement following today\u2019s verdict in Minneapolis. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/hODghaQ25H\">pic.twitter.com\/hODghaQ25H<\/a><\/p>&mdash; NHL (@NHL) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NHL\/status\/1384618281596817409?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 20, 2021<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;While we hope the end of the trial offers a chance for healing, we remain committed to actively engaging in the movement for equality and we invite our fans to join us in supporting systemic change.&#8221; read the tweet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No mention of George Floyd being murdered or the verdict.
