{"id":1217,"date":"2021-03-13T12:36:20","date_gmt":"2021-03-13T17:36:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/firstandpen.com\/staging\/5861\/?p=1217"},"modified":"2021-03-15T10:26:34","modified_gmt":"2021-03-15T14:26:34","slug":"credentialed-while-black-happened-to-ewing-as-it-happens-to-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/firstandpen.com\/staging\/5861\/credentialed-while-black-happened-to-ewing-as-it-happens-to-us\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Credentialed While Black&#8221; Happened To Ewing As It Happens To Us"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Big East men\u2019s basketball tournament championship game is set for Saturday night, and the jokes about how Patrick Ewing should arrive at Madison Square Garden began when his Georgetown team clinched its berth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier this week, Garden security found it difficult to identify Ewing. In response, jokesters suggested he should show up in his Knicks uniform. It was something Ewing was not shy to point out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Patrick Ewing was upset because MSG security stopped him and asked him for his credentials.<br><br>Seriously though. How do you not know Patrick Ewing? And how do you NOT know him at MSG!?!? \ud83d\ude21<br><br>\ud83d\udcf9 <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/sportingnews?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@sportingnews<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/oz0xuPyolN\">pic.twitter.com\/oz0xuPyolN<\/a><\/p>&mdash; First and Pen (@firstandpen) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/firstandpen\/status\/1370144083084255241?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 11, 2021<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The unsaid, underlying, less-laughworthy question, unfortunately, was: would that be enough?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or would the greatest achievement of Ewing\u2019s post-playing, head-coaching career be again tainted by more of the microagressions that every Black person in America is forced to deal with daily \u2013 regardless of whether their plaque is in the Hall of Fame, their jersey hangs in the arena rafters, or their institution\u2019s name is stitched on their warmups?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the time that followed that incident, Ewing\u2019s revelation of how Garden security had treated him was dissected, a process often done in search of holes, justifications and reasons to dismiss him, his complaint and the very notion that he was the victim of anything and entitled to any understanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was a wholly predictable defensive reaction, coming overwhelmingly from a segment of the population that cherishes nothing in big-time celebrities \u2013 especially Black ones \u2013 more than silence, obedience, humility and gratitude.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The message, sometimes subtle, often not, was that Patrick Ewing needed to get over himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rest of us know differently, though, and if there were any questions about what Garden security did to him \u2013 and truth be told, was there even a question? \u2013 they fell into the category of, \u201cMan, even you?\u201d<\/p><div id=\"first-3671934963\" class=\"first-content first-entity-placement\"><!-- \/22950135888\/FAP_Article_Leaderboard_Instream2 -->\r\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1700413625220-0' style='min-width: 300px; min-height: 90px;'>\r\n  <script>\r\n    googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1700413625220-0'); });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It struck a nerve on so many levels. Levels as broad as every place in American society where Black people are assumed that we don\u2019t belong and have to prove that we do \u2013 and as specific as an extremely recognizable figure in his very recognizable former <em>and current <\/em>workplace. A workplace in which those in charge of gatekeeping are required, by policy and common sense, to understand implicitly and explicitly where they are, why they are there and who is supposed to be there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every Black person who has covered a major sports event felt Ewing\u2019s anguish immediately. They all know about walking around an arena during the Final Four, a ballpark during the playoffs, the stadium concourse during a Super Bowl or a college bowl game \u2026 and getting stopped every few feet as somebody official grabs the large credential hanging off the large lanyard around their neck and scrutinizing it just those few seconds too long, while their colleagues stroll freely past without a glance to get to the field, press conference or locker room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">None of us is a 7-foot basketball legend, either. In the gear of the team you\u2019ve coached for four years. In the building where, as he should never stop reminding everybody, his name and number are in the rafters. And where he dominated as a college player constantly over four years (while facing, there and at other Big East venues, arguably the most <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casualhoya.com\/2020\/6\/12\/21289620\/quotable-coach-our-classroom-court-educate-georgetown-patrick-ewing-john-thompson-racism-bigotry\">openly-racist opposing crowds<\/a> any college star has ever seen).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But history tells us that anything is possible.<\/p><div id=\"first-1740027850\" class=\"first-content_2 first-entity-placement\"><!-- \/22950135888\/FAP_Article_Leaderboard_Instream3 -->\r\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1700413989195-0' style='min-width: 300px; min-height: 90px;'>\r\n  <script>\r\n    googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1700413989195-0'); });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>It can happen to them, it can happen to us.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This incident occurred in the same venue where Knicks\u2019 owner James Dolan had Garden security <a href=\"https:\/\/theundefeated.com\/features\/new-york-knicks-charles-oakley\/\">physically carry Charles Oakley out of the building<\/a> four years back. Now it happened to Patrick Ewing, just as it still happens to us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And as it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/story\/_\/id\/30955818\/raptors-president-masai-ujiri-wants-fight-wrongly-accused-post-finals-incident-lost-moment-people-lost-their-lives\">happened to Masai Ujiri<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It hasn\u2019t yet been two years since a sheriff\u2019s deputy unilaterally decided that Ujiri, the president of the Toronto Raptors, did not belong on the court in Oakland in the minutes after his team won its first NBA championship. The cop shoving Ujiri, the angry retaliation, Kyle Lowry rescuing him, fans screaming for the cop to let him through, were all caught on video. Ujiri was still charged with assault. The deputy still sued him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And far too many people took the cop\u2019s word for it, that Ujiri was in the wrong, should have complied, shouldn\u2019t have assumed he was allowed to be there, should have done something beyond display the giant credential in his hand to satisfy the need to justify his existence.<\/p><div id=\"first-2306922918\" class=\"first-content_3 first-entity-placement\"><!-- \/22950135888\/FAP_Article_Leaderboard_Instream4 -->\r\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1700414036595-0' style='min-width: 300px; min-height: 90px;'>\r\n  <script>\r\n    googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1700414036595-0'); });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ujiri\u2019s ultimate moment was stolen by a badge deep in the thrall of protecting something much bigger than the Warriors\u2019 home court. It seems that Garden security felt the obligation to protect that same much-bigger thing from the encroachment of the tall middle-aged Black guy in gray sweats whose face and stature didn\u2019t, shockingly, ring a bell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ujiri\u2019s and Ewing\u2019s crimes: WATAWB (Walking Around The Arena While Black) and CYSWB (Celebrating Your Success While Black).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ewing also suffered from CWB (Coaching While Black). The emotion dripping off of every moment of Georgetown\u2019s Cinderella run to the Big East final barely six months after <a href=\"https:\/\/firstandpen.com\/staging\/5861\/honoring-john-thompson-john-chaney-and-the-black-coach-father\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">John Thompson\u2019s passing<\/a> \u2013 that ties into this, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the excellent autobiography published soon after his death, \u201cI Came As A Shadow,\u2019\u2019 Thompson pointed out frequently, when discussing not only the causes he championed and the educational responsibilities he shouldered but the lens through which he was viewed, that \u201cI never had the luxury of just being a basketball coach.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If any of the other Big East coaches in the building this week encountered what he did, they appear to have kept it to themselves. If they had any feelings about it, they have yet to surface. If this is a routine occurrence for coaches at the numerous conference tournaments over the last two weeks, it isn\u2019t readily apparent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The majority of coaches can just coach their teams. One segment has to run a gauntlet the majority doesn\u2019t. It isn\u2019t imaginary. It isn\u2019t something they\u2019re being too sensitive about. It isn\u2019t ego talking. It\u2019s \u201cLet me see if you\u2019re really supposed to be here.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ironically, Georgetown\u2019s championship-game opponent, Creighton, is coached by a man <a href=\"https:\/\/firstandpen.com\/staging\/5861\/creighton-coach-greg-mcdermott-suspended-for-plantation-comment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">who had been suspended<\/a> for a game last week for telling his players behind closed doors that they needed to decide if they want to stay <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbssports.com\/college-basketball\/news\/creighton-suspends-coach-greg-mcdermott-after-referring-to-program-as-the-plantation-in-speech-to-players\/\">\u201con the plantation.\u2019\u2019<\/a> No word yet on whether anyone at the Garden has questioned his credentials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But for Ewing, it\u2019s GTWWB (Going To Work While Black).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Patrick Ewing, of the Georgetown Ewings and the Springfield Ewings and the Only Worthwhile Knicks Team Of The Last Half Century Ewings, couldn\u2019t just go about his job of coaching his underdog program at the Big East tournament without having to show proof he was supposed to be there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Knicks\u2019 Hall of Famer was in the Garden, the self-proclaimed \u201cWorld\u2019s Most Famous Arena\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And he had to show his papers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe if he shows the No. 33 in orange-and-white he will be approved for entry.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Big East men\u2019s basketball tournament championship game is set for Saturday night, and the jokes about how Patrick Ewing should arrive at Madison Square Garden began when his Georgetown team clinched its berth.
