Snoop Dogg is a major sports fan who loves the Steelers, Lakers and his youth football league. So his latest quest to own a sports team should come as no surprise, even if it’s in hockey.
That’s right sports fans. The D-O-Double G from the LBC is looking to own an NHL team by joining a group that’s bidding on the Ottawa Senators.
And it’s not just any group. It’s spearheaded by tech entrepreneur Neko Sparks, who is looking to become the first Black majority team owner in NHL history.
“Amazing what @neko_sparks is trying to do in Ottawa & I’m looking forward to being apart of that ownership team,” wrote Snoop on Instagram. “I WANNA BRING HOCKEY TO OUR COMMUNITY.”
According to Front Office Sports, the group Sparks is putting together is one of the most diverse in pro sports. It includes Snoop, Adidas executive Daniel Cherry and other soon-to-be-revealed celebrities.
But the group has some major competition in the bidding process.
Actor Ryan Reynolds is reportedly putting a group together to make a $1 billion bid for the Senators. Also in the mix is Sacramento Kings owner Vivek Ranadivé.
The team was originally bought by Eugene Melnyk in 2003 for $92 million. After his passing last year, the Melnyk family put the team up for sale.
A 20-year return of over $900 million? Sounds like a great idea for the Melnyk family.
Now let’s see if Sparks, Snoop and their group can make Black majority ownership of an NHL team a reality.
