Seahawks fans haven’t had much to cheer about lately, but that changed yesterday when they gave their star receiver, DK Metcalf, the big deal he was looking for.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the two sides agreed on a three-year, $72 million extension that includes both $58.2 million guaranteed and a $30 million signing bonus, the latter being the highest ever for a receiver.
The 24-year-old, who was in uniform for camp but refused to practice without a new deal, can now smile and get back to work.
Seattle now has their star receiver under contract until he’s 28, which should make both the team and their fans happy as it brings some stability to a franchise that’s in a state of transition.
They traded away 9x Pro Bowler Russell Wilson to the Broncos in March.
In April, they released 6x All-Pro linebacker Bobby Wagner, who promptly signed with Super Bowl Champs, the LA Rams.
Then a few hours before announcing Metcalf’s deal, the team took two big hits.
First safety Jamal Adams was held out of practice due to lingering pain from hand surgery. That was followed up by Seahawks legend K.J. Wright, who played for Seattle for 10 years, announcing his retirement in an emotional press conference.
But signing Metcalf (hopefully) took a little sting out of those events.
DK Metcalf ($24 million) is now tied with Stefon Diggs as the sixth highest paid in the league (annually) behind Tyreek Hill ($30 million), Davante Adams ($28 million), DeAndre Hopkins ($27,250,000), Cooper Kupp ($26,700,000), and A.J. Brown ($25 million).
