Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has been of the NFL’s best coaches since he stepped into the shoes of the team’s former head coach, Bill Cowher, in 2007.

In his 14 year career with the Steelers, he’s never had a losing record, owns a career head coaching record of 145-78-1 (.650 winning percentage), made the playoffs nine times, has two Super Bowl appearances and one Super Bowl ring. Yet for some reason, his name is never mentioned in the ranks of the elite coaches like Bill Belichick, Andy Reid and Sean Payton. While Belichick remains at the top of that list, Tomlin owns a better winning percentage than the other two coaches and has the same number of Super Bowl rings as well.

Tomlin led the Steelers to an 11-0 record last season and was in the running for coach of the year before finishing 12-4.

Now, a week before the NFL Draft, the Steelers rewarded their winning coach with a three-year contract extension, ensuring that coach Tomlin would lead the team through at least the 2024 season.

“I am pleased to announce we have extended Mike Tomlin’s contract through the 2024 season,” said Steelers President Art Rooney II. “Mike is one of the most successful head coaches in the National Football League, and we are confident in his leadership to continue to lead our team as we work to win another championship.”

The third longest tenured coach currently in the NFL is excited to remain in Pittsburgh.

“I am extremely grateful for this contract extension and want to thank Art Rooney II and everyone in the organization for the support in my first 14 seasons,” said Tomlin. “We have a goal of winning the organization’s seventh Super Bowl championship, and I couldn’t be more enthusiastic about this upcoming season.”

The team obviously knew what they were doing back in 2007 when they handed the reins to Tomlin, a long-time assistant coach with no head coaching experience. The team’s trust in him has been rewarded over these last fourteen years. Now they look to start his 15th season off on a high note with a new deal and the 24th pick in the first round of next week’s NFL Draft.
