LeBron James is already recognized as one of the greatest to ever play the game of basketball and has a long resume full of accolades. This Friday, he will add another job to his numerous titles.

Flag bearer.

James, who was voted to be the male U.S. flag bearer by his Olympic teammates at the opening ceremony on Friday on the River Seine in Paris, becomes the first men’s basketball player to carry the flag for Team USA. Sue Bird (2020) and Dawn Staley (2004) previously held that honor.

“We are thrilled to announce LeBron James as one of two flag bearers who will lead Team USA in the Opening Ceremony, and officially open the Paris 2024 Games,” U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee CEO Sarah Hirshland said in a statement. “Being selected by your teammates to carry the flag is a tremendous honor – and a testament to LeBron’s passion for Team USA and his dedication to his sport. We will watch with great pride as the flag bearers lead our athletes who are about to embark on a remarkable journey together.”

It’s an honor for the 4x Olympian, who has 2 golds (Beijing in 2008 and London in 2012) and one bronze medal (Athens in 2004), and who is trying to help Team USA win its 5th straight gold.

“It’s an incredible honor to represent the United States on this global stage, especially in a moment that can bring the whole world together,” said James said in a statement. “For a kid from Akron, this responsibility means everything to not only myself, but to my family, all the kids in my hometown, my teammates, fellow Olympians and so many people across the country with big aspirations. Sports have the power to bring us all together, and I’m proud to be a part of this important moment.”

James was nominated by USA Basketball and Olympic teammate Steph Curry.

“We understand how much of an honor it is to be in that position and I think Bron’s entire career, on and off the court, speaks for itself as him being worthy of that honor,” Curry said in the nomination video.

“He has represented what it means to be excellent both on and off the court in his commitment to service and to uplifting the community in all ways that he knows how has been a lifelong passion,” continued Curry. “And the work speaks for itself.”

The 39-year-old James, who became the NBA’s All-Time leading scorer this past season, will hoist the flag for the U.S. as the team walks out as the second-to-last nation during the opening ceremony. The U.S. is in that position because it will host the 2028 Games in LA.

France, the host nation, receives the honor of walking out last.

Team USA will announce the female flagbearer on Tuesday.
