As a player, Durant is one of the best in the league, and he proved that again in the Olympics, not only by winning his fourth Olympic gold medal but also by becoming Team USA’s all-time Olympic scorer.
As an investor, Durant is proving to be just as good, particularly when it comes to sports ventures.
In May of 2022, his Thirty Five Ventures company, which he owns with partner Rich Kleinman, acquired an ownership stake in the Philadelphia Union of MLS. Two years later, they became a minority partner of NWSL team, Gotham FC.
On Monday, Durant made another soccer investment, this time in Ligue 1 club, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG).
According to The Athletic, Durant “bought a ‘single digit millions’ shareholding in the Arctos fund which has invested in PSG.”
The U.S. based private investment firm owns a 12.5% stake in PSG which they purchased last year. That values the club at roughly $4.58 billion.
Durant visited the French club last week during his time at the Paris Games, which is when the two sides reportedly made the deal.
Durant’s investment continues the trend of NBA players buying equity stakes in soccer teams.
This includes Grant Hill and his wife Tamia, who joined soccer ownership group Orlando Soccer Holdings (MLS team Orlando City and NWSL team Orlando Pride) this past October; and former Titans star Derrick Henry and Milwaukee Bucks’ star Giannis Antetokounmpo, who both joined the ownership group of MLS club, Nashville SC.
“My father was a professional soccer player, and it was the first sport I fell in love with in Greece,” Giannis Antetokounmpo said in a statement. “I’ve always had the dream of owning a soccer team. When my brothers and I explored Nashville SC, we knew it was a team and a city that we wanted to get involved with.”
Coming off of his Team USA leading fourth Olympic gold medal and becoming Team USA’s all-time leading scorer, Durant had a successful two weeks in Paris to begin with.
Now he heads home with a new investment and an expanded his soccer portfolio.
