Since arriving at George Mason in July 2023, Athletics Director Marvin Lewis has built the Colonials up into a championship program.

And because of it, he’s just had his contract extended through 2030.

Under his leadership, George Mason had one of its most successful seasons in university history last year, winning five A10 Conference titles in men’s soccer, women’s basketball, women’s indoor track and men’s outdoor track. Per the release, “This marks the most titles in a single season since joining the A-10, and the program’s best overall performance since 1994–95.”

“I’m incredibly honored by the opportunity to continue leading George Mason Athletics—on the field, in the classroom, and throughout Northern Virginia,” Lewis said. “Over the past two years, we’ve built a powerful foundation rooted in belief, purpose, and community, and this is just the beginning. With the continued support of President Washington, our dedicated coaches, competitive and driven athletes, and the entire Mason Nation, we’re going to keep breaking barriers, inspiring excellence, and transforming lives through the power of sports. Together, we will grow and thrive.”

Lewis’ vision and hard work has led to success for the Colonials both on and off the field of play.

George Mason student-athletes have a 3.37 GPA for the 2024-25 academic year and the department graduated 95% of its athletes, the highest in program history. Even more impressively, 40% of the school’s student-athletes made the Dean’s List with a GPA of 3.5 or higher, and 78 of athletes were recognized as Provost Scholars (GPA of 3.75 or higher).

Financially, he balanced the budget for two consecutive years and raised more than $3 million last season, which is another program record.

This year, George Mason launched a five-year strategic program called “Patriots United. Together We Thrive,” which focuses on student-athlete development, strategic partnerships, competitive excellence and regional impact.

As part of that program, the school will break ground later this year on the Basketball and Academic Performance Center, a new $30 million, 30,000 square-foot facility that is dedicated to achieving the goals of new strategic initiative.

Lewis’ hard work has also earned him an appointment by the A10 to the NCAA D1 Women’s Basketball Committee, which is another history-making moment for the university.

“During his two years here, Marvin has led our Athletics department to new heights in a rapidly evolving landscape in intercollegiate athletics and has developed a clear vision for our future,” said University President Gregory Washington. “His vision will strengthen resources and lead our student-athletes to even greater success in the classroom and in competition, all while uniting our campuses, our alumni, the Northern Virginia community, and Patriots everywhere around George Mason Athletics.”

Watch out for the Patriots as they’re building something serious in Northern Virginia.
