Say what you want about Deion Sanders, but you can’t say that he doesn’t try to help out his team.

Earlier this week, Colorado’s head football coach gathered his team in a meeting room to give them a speech about fatherhood, something that’s near and dear to his heart as two of his sons play on the team.

Afterward, he brought eight players with children to the front of the room and presented them with a special gift.

Through a partnership with Elevations Credit Union, each of those players received a bank account for their kids with $2,121 in it. It was part of coach Prime’s ongoing effort to educate his players about financial responsibility.

“By the time the baby is 18, the baby will be straight and have a head start on life,” said Sanders. “That’s what we need. Imagine if you had 100 grand dumped on you when you were 18…Let’s pave the way, let’s lay it out so the child has an advantage in life.”

Sanders is not only serious about family and fatherhood, but also about money, and he wants to impart that message in his players any and every time he can.

“It made my whole day. I was like, ‘This is amazing. This is crazy,’” said Reggie Calhoun Jr., director of operations and business development for Colorado’s 5430 Alliance. “To have a coach talking about building men and see him put the work in and put actions forth, it changes the way you view coaching in the college sports world.”

The investment in the future and well-being of his players and their families is nothing new to Sanders. He did the same during his two-and-a-half years at Jackson St.

When the football facility needed financial help to complete the renovations, Sanders donated half of his salary to finish up the job.

When the water crisis hit the city, Sanders got involved to help get water and sanitary facilities for his players.

Now he’s looking out for the financial futures of his players, something which we haven’t seen from many other coaches.
