Last May, the NAACP issued a warning to Black people thinking about traveling to Florida. Now it’s done the same for Black student-athletes.
On Monday, the organization issued a warning to Black student-athletes, urging them to refrain from playing sports in the Sunshine State due to its “anti-Black policies.”

“Florida’s rampant anti-Black policies are a direct threat to the advancement of our young people and their ability to compete in a global economy. Diversity, equity, and inclusion are paramount ensuring equitable and effective educational outcomes,” said NAACP President and CEO, Derrick Johnson in a statement. “The value Black, and other college athletes bring to large universities is unmatched. If these institutions are unable to completely invest in those athletes, it’s time they take their talents elsewhere. The NAACP will remain unwavering in our efforts to hold Governor Ron DeSantis, and all oppressive elected officials accountable for their attempts to unravel our democracy.”
In a letter to NCAA members, the NAACP came out swinging about Florida under DeSantis and stated its thoughts about Black athletic participation in the state.
“Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has made no effort to conceal his administration’s devaluation of Black America. From racist voting policies, to unraveling reproductive freedoms and attempting to rewrite Black history, DeSantis has waged war on Black America. Now, as a result of his administration’s anti-Black ideals, all state-funded universities in Florida will be forced to dismantle their diversity, equity, and inclusion programs.”
Last week, the University of Florida shuttered its DEI office in response to a bill signed by DeSantis last May banning all state-funded colleges and universities from spending money on DEI initiatives. The move eliminated 13 full-time DEI positions and 15 administrative appointments, while also terminating external DEI-focused contracts.
The move infuriated many, including Florida football legend Emmitt Smith, who blasted his alma mater.
“I am utterly disgusted by UF’s decision and the precedent that it sets,” wrote Smith. “Without the DEI department, the job falls to the Office of the Provost, who already has their hands full, to raise money for the university and continue to advance the academic studies and athletic programs. We cannot continue to believe and trust that a team of leaders all made up of the same background will make the right decision when it comes to equality and diversity. History has already proven that is not the case.“
DeSantis has made Florida an unwelcoming and dangerous place for those who don’t look or think like him, especially for those with melanin.
His culture wars, “Stop WOKE Act,” “Don’t Say Gay” law and other blatantly discriminatory policies have turned the state hostile and left residents confused, angry, hurt, scared and unemployed.
In its letter, the NAACP highlighted what’s transpiring in Florida and recommended student-athletes take their talents elsewhere while making an exception for HBCUs in the state.
“To all current and prospective college student-athletes – the NAACP urges you to reconsider any potential decision to attend, and compete at a predominantly white institution in the state of Florida. This is not about politics. It’s about the protection of our community, the progression of our culture, and most of all, it’s about your education, and your future.”
The NAACP acknowledged the risk their recommendation poses to the earnings potential of Black athletes, but the risk to Black people in general is too great to ignore.
“The sad reality is, for many Black student- athletes, collegiate sports may be their sole opportunity at achieving the upward mobility necessary to propel them into their rightful places in society.
“This imbalance of power and profit demands a response, particularly because these institutions reap considerable financial benefits from the very individuals they fail to stand by in matters of diversity, equity, and inclusion. If any institution is to reap the benefits of Black talent, it is only right that they completely invest in Black futures.”
Black athletes face an unfair, but critical decision.
Should they be required to sacrifice potential athletic and financial rewards for the greater good?
If they look to history and see the change brought about by fearless Black athlete activists like Jackie Robinson, Muhammad Ali, Curt Flood, WNBA players and the University of Missouri football team, the answer is clear.
And the NAACP agrees.
“Remember, your talents and courage on the field should be mirrored by the commitments made to you off the field. Choose wisely, for the future belongs to those willing to demand—and receive—the respect and opportunities they rightfully deserve.”
