On Sunday, the story broke that Trump would be awarding the Medal of Freedom to Patriots’ coach Bill Belichick.

After it started to circulate, everyone from the media and fans to Massachusetts Representative Jim McGovern expressed their feelings about the situation.

“To accept it is disgraceful.” said McGovern.

After remaining silent for most of Monday, Belichick finally issued a statement, saying that he was declining the award.

“Recently I was offered the opportunity to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which I was flattered by out of respect for what the honor represents and admiration for prior recipients. Subsequently, the tragic events of last week occurred and the decision has been made not to move forward with the award.

“Above all, I am an American citizen with great reverence for our nation’s values, freedom and democracy. I know I also represent my family and the New England Patriots team. One of the most rewarding things in my professional career took place in 2020 when, through the great leadership within our team, conversations about social justice, equality and human rights moved to the forefront and became actions.

“Continuing those efforts while remaining true to the people, team and country I love outweigh the benefits of any individual award.”

The Presidential Medal of Freedom was established by John F. Kennedy in 1963. Per the White House site: “This prestigious award is the Nation’s highest civilian honor, which is awarded by the President to individuals who have made especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors”

After the attack on the Capitol by domestic white terrorists last week, individuals, organizations and corporations have been pulling their support from Trump, buckling to the pressure in the aftermath of that attempted coup. And although it took longer than it should, Coach Belichick has finally followed suit and declined the tainted award.
