Great news for Kyle Jackson as Bowie State removed the interim tag from his title and officially named him its head football coach.
Jackson became the school’s tenth head coach in program history since the Bulldogs’ program was reinstated in 1972.
“It is with great Bulldog pride that we begin the next chapter in BSU football with the hiring of Kyle Lamont Jackson as our next head football coach,” said Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation Clyde Doughty, Jr. “During his year as interim, Kyle proved without a shadow of doubt that he is very capable of commanding the respect of his student-athletes, coaches and opponents while putting our football program in a position to be successful academically and athletically.”
The decision was based on Jackson leading the Bulldogs to a 6-4 record in 2022, a season in which eight players earned CIAA All-Conference honors.
“It’s a blessing just to be in the same category with some of the guys who had the opportunity to lead this program,” said Jackson. “I’m a homegrown guy. Bowie State is everything to me. It gave me the opportunity to earn my degree and finish playing the sport that I love. It’s a blessing being named the head coach here at Bowie State University.”
Jackson was a four-year starting linebacker for the Bulldogs (2007-2010) and was a two-time team captain (2009, 2010). After graduating with a sports management degree, he entered coaching as a defensive graduate assistant at Emporia State. He then moved on to become an assistant to the director of football operations at Georgia State before returning to his Alma mater as the linebackers and tight ends coach in 2011.
He left Bowie St. but returned again in 2017 as the linebackers and recruiting coordinator. During his tenure, the Bulldogs made the NCAA DII playoffs in 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2021. He also helped build the defense into a top 10 nationally ranked unit in 2019 and 2021.
Now the Bulldogs alum, Baltimore native and proven leader becomes the third Bowie State alum to lead the program, following in the footsteps of Dr. Henry Frazier, III (93′) and Damon Wilson (00′).
