The horrific Kellen Winslow Jr. saga is nearing an end, with the disgraced athlete staring at a 14 year prison sentence.
Winslow, 37, was convicted in 2019 of raping a 58-year old homeless woman in Encinitas, California. He faced a retrial on other charges and later pled guilty to raping an unconscious teen in 2003 and sexually battery of a 54-year old hitchhiker in Encinitas in 2018.
His horrific crimes came to light back in 2018 when he was arrested on burglary charges. As he was pleading not guilty and being held on $50,000 bail, his actions were revealed. He was linked to sexual crimes in the area, was arrested again and faced life in prison at the time. But now it over allegations of rape by five different women. This saw Winslow hit with 12 charges from the allegations.
He pled not guilty to charges of rape and kidnapping, but the testimony and evidence against him continued to accumulate. After a year of court appearances, a conviction on the aforementioned 2019 rape, and a retrial, his wife filed for divorce in September of 2019. Two months later, he pled guilty to the crimes committed in 2003 and 2018. But then Covid hit and the courts were shutdown.
Once they resumed operations, Winslow faced 18 years in prison for the three crimes. But on Friday, according to the NY Post, “a San Diego County Superior Court judge approved a change in which Winslow’s sexual battery plea was replaced with a guilty plea to assaulting the hitchhiker with the intent to commit rape.”
As a result, he accepted a 14-year prison sentence and is scheduled to be sentenced on March 3rd.
Kellen Winslow Jr. was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in 2004. He played with the team for four seasons and was a Pro Bowler in 2007. He moved on to play for the Bucs, Patriots and Jets before ending his career in 2013.
While he didn’t get all that he deserved for the horrendous crimes he committed, he’ll spend the next 14 years in jail.
Hopefully it’s hell.
